Many New Yorker's say the color of the line instead of listing the subways that run on it. They're color coordinated for a reason. Saying green line is easier than saying the four, five, six line.

In 30 years of living in Manhattan -you are the first person (outside of a Bostonian) I've ever heard use colors rather than letters or numbers to denote a particular line.

Same here. I've never heard of anyone in the city mention the color of the train.

Usually just the letter or number of the train, i.e. "the F train" or "the number 7 train."
