The architecture reflects the experimental nature of the park project, and I must say, most of it looks promising. They even got Kaufman to rise above his usual level of mediocrity.

    Designed 2005, Construction 2006-2008

Sitting adjacent to the High Line tracks and wrapped in a combination of perforated and punched metal and tinted, fritted, and clear glass, this condominium tower in the West Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan evokes the images of steam trains. The 43,000 SF residential tower, which consists of 24 dwelling units along with ground floor art galleries, is wrapped in a continuous metal and glass skin. This gradient skin, whose pattern was arrived at through the digital manipulation and abstraction of images of steam clouds, is accomplished through varying punches and perforations within a panelized system of semi-reflective stainless steel. The skin will be fabricated via a CNC (computer-numerically-controlled) turret punch, a machine that allows for great variation in the shapes and depths of the indentations and cuts in the metal surface. When viewed from a distance, the punches and indentation add relief and shadow, replicating, to a degree, the gradated shades of gray within clouds themselves. Lastly, the glazing system provides privacy at the level of the High Line Park as well as openness, lightness, and air over the entirety of the project.

What a shame that they couldn't acquire that horrible gas station. It's a disgusting eyesore.

^ The renderings doesn't really give you much of an idea, but that part of the building facing the gas station seems like is going to be a blank wall to me. Yes it is unfortunate they did not aquired the gas station.

No doubt someone else will gobble up the gas station in the near future ...

But the building seems to have an L-shape and fits around the gas station. I wonder if they bought the air rights.

The rendering on this one is incompetent and uncommunicative; can't tell what the materials are --or even if there are balconies.

Looks like there may be planes of glass. What's with all this glass on residential? It threatens to be the white brick of the present day.

    Default Community 4 Board Meeting

At the Community 4 Board meeting held on September 6th, it was announced that the Board will seek a 70% reduction in the number of Liquor Licenses in West Chelsea to preserve the quality of life. This was aimed at the Club community that has saturated West 27th, 28th and 29th Sts. The number of Club patrons has increased the occupancy of those blocks beyond capaicity. Most of the people living in West Chelsea will welcome the reduction which will improve the quality of life in the neighborhood along the Highline.

You would think that the fact that these buildings will be in full view of the high line park would inspire some of these developers to produce something a little more appealing to the eye. Damn are these bastards tasteless.
