The garages were reportedly for sale. Who did you get your information from?
Does anyone know what's going on with some of the other properties around this block? I heard that the Avis and neighboring businesses are moving and that a development is replacing them on the corner of 76th and Broadway. Believe the Beacon Garage is part of this but am not certain. Also heard that the Hertz on 77th is vacating.

In the case of Avis and Hertz, Avis and Hertz. Avis to move out in the next month or so (although they say they'll be back at that location in a few years) and Hertz to move out by the end of the year. When Avis moves out, the Duane Reade will be the only business on the street level in that building.
The Beacon garage is closing in two weeks and the Avis will close later and move to 82nd or 83rd. Condo going up at the corner--basically from the Jewish Community center to the Duane Reade. No word on who bought the garages (who the developer is) or how tall the new building will be. Security guard at Avis said the Beacon garage will be torn down first (it will come back in two years and be underground).
Guess those worried about the Harrison entrance facing some ugly garages won't have to anymore.
Can someone take pics of the Avis/Duane Reade and the Hertz buildings before they're torn down? Even ones from a mobilephone will do. Thanks.
I agree. It's amazing how quickly things can turnover. I heard that the condos will be in the 14-18 story range (I know that's a big range, but that's all I was able to find out). Anybody know who the developer is?
Also, I know the Hertz on 77th is leaving (they said so). The only rumor I heard, and it is just a rumor, is that the JCC had bought the garage. Not sure how accurate it is.
Walked by the Avis last PM. Sign said they were closing July 16th. Any specifics on what is developing there?
Wonder if they are condos or rentals
Looking at the businesses you have mentioned it would appear that they are all in the 5 storey building on thr corner of 76th and Broadway.
If this building is in danger then it would affect the following.
216 W 76th. Avis, on the corner.
2156 Broadway, Bella Roma Pizza.
2156 Broadway, Bear Bar West.
2154 Broadway, ??????
2150 Broadway, Duane Reade.
If you add The Beacon garage to these it would make a sizeable plot.
I have not been there for a year, so some of the above info could be out of date.
The pizza place and bar have been closed and the "?????" was a hair salon, which is also closed. The only non-garage business left in the building is the DR.
Does anyone know how we can change the name of the thread to the "The Harrison", the building's address or something similar?
216 West 76 (with the DR, etc) has 127' of Broadway frontage and is 107' deep.
210 West 76 (the Beacon Garage) has 75' of frontage on 76th street and is 97' deep.
That makes a footprint about 21,00 square feet. With a FAR of 10 in the C4-6A zoning, you get 210,000 buildable feet.
As a comparison, the Harrison has a lot footprint of about 15,000 square feet and a FAR of 7.52
If all of both 210 and 216 E 76 are indeed planned for development, it is a significant property. Perhaps we can move it to its own thread (216 W 76).
It's funny how a potential development of that size hasn't generated any buzz. It leads me to think that it's maybe not condos, but rather rentals, since the marketing of them would be much further down the line. Who knows.
Or the new owner has required the buildings be delivered vacant and has yet to close on them. Bad to generate buzz for something one has yet to actually own. So many things can go wrong.
In will be a long time before those units -- speculation -- could be occupied. Plans to filed, demo to be done, etc.
I wonder what the Harrison residents will think of this construction going on across the street for 18 months though once the project actually starts.
It's one of those NIMBY ironies for all the locals near Harrison who have dealt with construction noise, dust, and hassle. Part of the beauty of NYC. There's always something else and it goes around but everything eventually comes around.![]()

Fair point, but my guess is that this is a big plus for the Harrison. Getting rid of those garages, and the congetsion that comes with them, is a win (unless you bought one in the South Tower and what might have been a view will now be blocked).
What's the general thought on the Harrison?
