I know. Cut 2 lanes off the high way, and put in a streetcar for that price. Everyone would be better off and you could cross the street.
A 20 million dollar footbridge...wow.
I bet I could do the exact same job for about 40 grand.

Nice bridge we need it....... thanks
A light rail / street car going up the West Side Hiway would have been so smart. Figures that it didn't happen.
I've always thought that.
In fact, I would like to see car and bus traffic eliminated and have two lanes for the light rail. With all of the extra space from the former car lanes, the sidewalks could be widened and more trees/grass, etc. could be added.
Are you seriously suggesting eliminating West Side Highway? Where would all the traffic go... local streets? FDR? Can you imagine the congestion? That would not work. I do like the light rail idea though.
Well, there is always the proposed Westway that was canceled due to some stripped bass. This would be a great project, alleviate the traffic, create jobs and leave the surface open for your parks and light rail.
While I'm not proposing to eliminate the WSH, I have to admit, were it not there, traffic wouldn't change much. Non-highway streets are reasonably saturated, and many of the trips on the highway are surely discretionary. I know whenever I drive to work it's only because it's cheaper to park at the office using the early bird special than to leave it in a garage here in the Heights for the day. Incidentally, I don't own a car, but do borrow the parents' car from time to time. I'm also a few blocks from 2 different subway lines, so there's really no need to ever drive.
99% of people driving in Manhattan do so for convenience. Thus, if they have to deal with traffic -- tough!
Also, Silver and the other schmucks who opposed the congestion fee are real wangs.
