This photo has elements of Kertesz’ Meudon Viaduct, a masterpiece. Your version’s pretty good, too.

What did they do: clean the lower part of the bridge but not the upper?

The bridge renovation is ongoing and scheduled for completion in 2008, just in time for the centennial in 2009.

The colonnade is next to the bikeway, and they will probably have to close it to clean the stonework. The western (pedestrian) pathway is now closed; maybe they are cleaning that side.

They were meant to be viewing balconies, but have long been closed off by gates. Too bad. There are bump outs in the pathways at each of the towers. They provide good views if you can ignore the chain-link fencing. There is a gap between the fencing and the original railing, large enough for a camera. I don't think this was intentional.

Ornamental ironwork at one of the towers.

The pedestrian side has superior views, but there are good vistas from the bikeway.

Having lived nearby eons ago, it was a shock to see the anchorage granite in its original state. If they are serious about the acronym, the anchorage should be the defining space of the neighborhood. Some creative thinking is needed here. It's difficult to get a sense of the space with most of it closed off by construction fencing, but it is mostly intact. The main intrusion is an MTA building, seen here on the far right.

Unfortunately, looking at buildings is the best thing to do in Brooklyn.

Another example of the NYC DOT trying to transform itself from a department of transportation to a department of streets.

One of 30 planned plazas throughout the city, a parking triangle in DUMBO is transformed into the Pearl St Plaza.

The space is still evolving. A farmers' market is planned, and all the asphalt covering the Belgian blocks will be removed. There's a much larger space through the archway and in front of the bridge anchorage that is being used by construction crews renovating the bridge. Don't know what's planned for that.
