Default Question about the “Helmsley Building” (for Lofter1)

    Hello.
With its creation the “Helmsley” had as a name “New York Central Building”.

For article that I do have to make on the “Helmsley” I seek with it dates Harry Helmsley gave him the name of “New York General Building” and in which it dates Leona Helmsley gave him its true name?

    Thank you

The info on name changes / dates is somewhat conflicting, but it seems it was re-named "Helmsley" around or shortly after 1997 (but other accounts claim Helmsley changed the name BEFORE his death in 1997 -- and that is supported by info below) ...

According to the NY TIMES :
... In 1977 the investor Harry Helmsley bought 230 Park Avenue and gave it his name; the partnership he established still owns the building. In 1982 the landmarks commission designated both the exterior and the lobby of the building, without opposition from Mr. Helmsley's group ...

    And :
    To the Editor:
Your article on the former New York Central Building at 230 Park Avenue (''For the Helmsley Building, Restoration at the Top,'' Sept. 15) was enlightening, but you neglected to mention the genius who managed to change the building's name to the New York General Building, before Harry B. Helmsley attached his own.
The change to General Building required the simple alteration of the ''c'' to a ''g,'' and the substitution of but one letter, ''e'' for ''t'' in Central. Whoever he was, he deserved praise.

    Manhattan
According to Peter L. Malkin, a frequent business partner of Mr. Helmsley, it was Mr. Helmsley who changed the name from the New York Central Building to the New York General Building.

    And :
''I'm cheap,'' Mr. Helmsley allowed in 1982, explaining that he had changed the name of the New York Central Building at 230 Park Avenue to New York General so that he would have to replace only two letters in the facade. (He later rechristened it the Helmsley Building.)

    According to wikipedia:
    New York General Building
When New York Central sold the building, Harry Helmsley renamed the building to New York General Building. The building was easily renamed as the "C" and "T" in Central were masterfully chiseled into "G" and "E" respectively.
    The Helmsley Building
Later, Leona Helmsley once again renamed the building The Helmsley Building in what may be the final name for this grand building.
    Interesting tidbit:
    Miscellanea
On September 10, 1931, capo de tutti capi Salvatore Maranzano was murdered in his ninth-floor office here by hitmen sent by Lucky Luciano and Vito Genovese, ambitious underlings whom Maranzano had hired Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll to kill.
I checked NYC Landmarks for info but didn't come up with anything more.

This article from 1996 simply refers to it as "230 Park Avenue".

Harry Helmsley died on January 4, 1997.

This article dated January 7, 1997 refers to 230 Park as "the Helmsley Building":
In the Helmsley Building at 230 Park Avenue, a picture of Mr. Helmsley was put on display in the lobby yesterday, encircled by some of the elaborate floral arrangements that had been received.
Helmsley's 1994 WILL makes no mention of the building.

    Nice image :
