Derek, you do not look like your "online" personality...but then, not many people do, I guess. No offense but I always thought you were a white guy.

And I thought you were still in architecture school!

You must have gone out into the real world to find this out; most students are blissfully unaware, though they should be told by their professors. When they get out of school, it hits them. In fact, architecture should come with a warning label.

Norman Foster and Frank Gehry feel fulfilled. Two among millions.

Man, you sound like the ex-con who wants back in the Big House.

I wish I knew more about what I was getting into in high school.
They should be required to tell you, but they're deluded themselves. The elephant is in the room, but no one admits it. Architecture is about the most regulated occupation there is. So they tell you it's for the creative to spread their wings. No wonder all the starchitects use "architects of record": they're the guys down in the boiler room.

Sometimes I'm almost to de groun'
    Oh, yes, Lord

Although you see me goin' 'long so
    Oh, yes, Lord
I have my trials here below
    Oh, yes, Lord

If you get there before I do
    Oh, yes, Lord
Tell all-a my friends I'm coming too
    Oh, yes, Lord

At least here you get to deal with architecture conceptually --as it might be in an ideal world. You think you've got it in you to be Frank Gehry? If so, go for it.

I've got an idea. Why don't you go back to architecture school and get a Master's degree? Then you can mouth off all day without actually having to do the shit shoveling. Not much money in it, but it's good work; I did this for seven years. It's also a lot like posting on Wired New York.

If you stick it out and get a PhD, they'll pay your air fare, expenses and a gratuity to mouth off in Kuala Lumpur and St. Louis.

Ha, well I was considering getting my masters, but I was tired of the architectural BS by the time I graduated. I also hate public speaking.

There's only so far in debt I want to go anyway; 5 years is enough. I'll just stick it out, and get my forum fix in the evenings.

One of the pleasant perks to being in a band is that good photographers with good equipment are always getting pics of you....
