The bricks on front of The Distrikt are trying to look like clouds disappearing into infinity
Tried but failed! Looks more like a bad patch job.

At first I didn't realise what you were referring to because I was too busy looking in dismay at that exposed brickwork on the building next door .

A group of kindergarten kids could've done a better job.

I can't believe breaking the street wall like that is even allowed . That poor brownstone looks pathetically out of place now.

Those 4 buildings don't even form a cohesive group which makes them even more ugly than they already are.

Sorry, but I just do not see the architectural awfulness here: perplexing. I do have my own opinions about these things; but do at least find some relief in the fact that our resident expert in all things Art & Architecture claims that this ensemble is “just fine”. So there.

Yeah, right. This stretch looks just as fine as any hotel grouping on a freeway off ramp anywhere across America.

That's some high bar to aim for.

    Default distrikt brick

the Distrikt's brick shows a flower up the facade of the building (it helps to walk inside the lobby and see the flower in the lobby and the restaurant)...I thought it was subtle enough to be interesting and is set far apart from the other obvious crap on the street. I don't know what they could have done with such a tiny footprint, but if you step inside the building you can tell that someone took the time to thread true design throughout...

I don't post much in this thread; sort of like 'piling on' in football.

    But after seeing this,

    it's clear who's making piles.

This is one of the worst ensemble of buildings I've seen anywhere in the city. Is the intent to make the other McSams look good by comparison?

Ugh, I had to relocate for my job to 353 W. 39th St and guess what I see when I look out my window? The Gene Kaufman 3-cladded monster. I can't believe I have to look at this crap for 40 hours a week.

Aesthetically this is good news because 90 percent of these hotels look horrible. However, these new 13,000 rooms are the only reason many tourists could even afford to vacation in NY.

It's it too hard to get the kind of quality enjoyed by most of the country in this city without paying an exorbitant amount for it.

Mayor and Hotel Union Check Out Together

Sam Chang, the inexhaustible builder of small, limited-service hotels, has this decade dotted New York with boxy architecture adorned with various fluorescent signs. "Holiday Inn Express," "Hampton Inn" and their homogeneous brethren crackle from at least 35 of his inns citywide.

Options for the developer-legendary in development circles for his speed-will soon start to narrow....

Took some more pics of this today that I'll post later.

It's rather hideous but could have been much worse.

Compare the century old building on the corner to this pile of junk. Talk about degeneration.
