    Couldn't agree more.

Every housing project in NYC (or at least the denser parts of the city, including all of Manhattan and much of Brooklyn) should be viewed in this light. Between grassy no-man's lands and parking lots, the amount of dead, unused and wasted space in the majority of post-war housing projects is astounding. Every last one of them should be fair game for being built out with infill (or razing/rebuilding) and restoring street grids where possible or where it makes sense.

NYCHA is already doing this. They have plans for infill on pretty much all their parking lots and available spaces.

There are already mixed-income infill projects u/c in Chelsea, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

They're also putting in more mixed uses, such as a new charter school (in Harlem) and retail (in Staten Island).

Interesting. Do you happen to have any links to info on those projects? (Apologies for the digression away from Sinai.)

If a Mod is viewing this thread, the title should be changed to eliminate the 'proposed'.

Thanks for the info, Lofter. This sounds like the most dramatic such initiative, though over two years have passed and there seems to be little news since then. I would certainly be inclined to agree with the Sun, though, in calling the city's housing projects the "last great development frontier"...

Extremely unfriendly base. Come on, the neighborhood isn't as bad as it used to be.

This section of Fifth Ave. was never remotely bad, not even in the 70's and 80's. Upper Fifth Avenue was always a good address, even in the lean years.

Now interior blocks were another story in those days.

The base is for Mt. Sinai Medical Center. It isn't residential space.
