Although I hate Macklowe for, among other things, building a lame box in a prime location, the glass has started to rise, and it's surprisingly nice.

I walked by on May 14th, and more very nice glass is going up. It's the one saving grace of this otherwise lame project.

That picture really does it no justice. The glass looks great. It is very smooth and ultra reflective of the masonry buildings around it. Of course, with curtain wall, we won't really know until the project is completed.
I last walked by this site maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago, so I can't comment on whether the glass is nice. But the picture -- like many new glass buildings -- looks like some abomination of 1960s public architecture: if you added a little bit of dark red brick right below the green-colored floors, it'd resemble either my suburban high school (c. 1971), a local gynecologists' office in my hometown (c. 1975), or a bank/basement barbershop in town (c. 1965). It's a throwback to what I think is some of the most poorly ageing non-factory architecture this country ever produced.
Excuse my rant but: let's have some respect for small town 1960's modern architecture.... consider that by mid-decade ersatz "Colonial" style was taking over plenty of mainstreets and highways. In many towns, a lot of that bland modern-style stuff is the only "good" post-WWII architecture that has remained. IMHO it's the stuff that has aged best.
Be that as it may: yes, it does look 1950's/60-ish, but at least shown in the tiny photo above, it looks good. Not great, but good.... in a background-building kind of way.

I guess if you are going to build buildings this bad, you might as well have mercy and let people look at the reflections instead of the building.

I guess this is anti-climactic given the previous picture post. The glass is highly reflective and looks very good. It'll be interesting to see who is taking space. This location is overrated, too crowded, and too expensive for the typical office worker.
