Had they continued with the pattern below all the way up, it would have looked pretty cool and been much more of a visual success in my opinion.
Its just one of those cases where form follows function. The layout of hotels often has blank walls at both the ends of the building, as every room faces out in only two directions. As it is those corners happen to make condos much more desirable, and so the design of this one had to make that shift somehow. Perhaps the architect could have done a better job connecting the top to the bottom, with at least the limestone continuing up the facade. I don't think it looks super bad, but what I really don't like is the mechanical floor separating the hotel from the condos, it doesn't relate to anything else on the building.
We can only wish that's limestone up the sides.
Nope, they're imitation limestone: concrete.
