If they're going to cover up that part of the building anyway, then why not put in a concrete wall there to at least get better structural integrity out of it?
I dont think structural integrity is an issue with wall systems. The strutural integrity is built into the columns and floors. I think its a matter of 'value engineering'. A prefab. precast concrete wall is probably the cheapest system you can get to put on a building. IN the end its all about cost. and reducing cost unless you are rich. I stated earlier that they reduced the depth of the 'fins' a great deal on each end. Each item goes a long way to saving hundreds of thousands/maybe millions of dollars.

Considering the line up of towers along Sixth Ave, between 23rd & 34th, this building is a friggin' masterpiece.

Walked up Sixth above 23rd the other day: That stretch seems to have turned into nothing more than a bad Strip Mall on Steroids. Unrelenting uniformity of the street wall there is visually deadening (thank you City Planning and new zoning regs ). Terrible signage on almost all the new retail spaces. Low end materials abound. Could be anywhere. Sadly it's in the heart of Manhattan.

The crappiness of the buildings are more the fault of developers than city planning...unless you believe the area should have never been rezoned in the first place.

So are they leaving that concrete edge bare in preparation for the fins?

This is 143 W 30 St, just down the block. Wonder what was there before...

Wasn't much, on google maps it shows a one story building with not much ornamentation.
