This is a great photo because it allows for the direct contrast of classicism and late-modernism.
One is for-the-ages... inspiring... achingly beautiful... the best of what we could once build.
The other represents the best (considering it commands some of the highest selling prices in the City - due to its views of classics like MetLife, ESB, etc.) of what we can currently build: mediocre and middling in comparison.
One could argue that the photo represents a decline in our values, standards and abilities.

...you could argue that stripping some of the ornament off the old building actually improved its appearance.
Compare the original photo above to the current look in the color photo. A rare example, perhaps, of less is more.
Generally, however, I agree that more ornament improves a building's appeal.
I respectfully disagree. I find the build, sans ornamentation, to be blander than sliced white bread. I was shocked years ago when I first saw photos of it with ornamentation and was saddened to see how nice it was. This could only occur in a barbarous city in a barbarous country.

It's true. Most New Yorkers are extremely civilized. However, those who own property in Manhattan (exlcuding, of couse, simple coops or condos that can't be razed) and those who "develop" it are among the most disgusting, greedy whores I've ever seen.

fwiw, I also think 1 Madison is a fine building. Cool boxy shape, quality glass, no huge blank walls--I'm pleased.
Work on this has slowed to a crawl. I think Trump SoHo is moving faster.
Maybe it is better to have the construction appear to be at a crawl than it is to have the completed building look deserted due to lack of sell-out.
Wasn't sure where to ask this...What's happening at the northeastern corner of 24th and Park Avenue South? The building that were there were razed.
The Rem is Dead?
Hearing rumors that the Rem is officially dead. Not surprising as there is no plan for it.
But does this mean that the "temporary" lobby on 23rd street will now be permanent? Will the developer actually build the much smaller building described in the plan but never shown to anyone?
