OK, so one thing led to another. Beginning to See the Light.

    Then...The Gift...and..Sister Ray.

Default Manu Chao ManuChao Manu chao-chao-chao

Q: What do you get when you take a measure of Clash, a big helping of Bob Marley, and put them together in a French-Spanish one-of-a-kind artist?

... and at Prospect Park in 2006 no less. Anybody see this concert?

    My quick and easy trans...

    "La Primavera"

What time is it my heart?
What time is it my heart?

What time is it in England?
What time is it in Japan?
What time is it over in Fistera?

What time is it, eh bye-bye bomb?
What time is it for this entire life?
What time is it in Gibraltar?
What time is it in Washington?

They have deceived us with bye-bye bomb --
They have deceived us with the springtime...

Then, in English, "This song is talking about these f***ing politicians...[etc]"

Also, from the same concert, "Bienvenida a Tiajuana"

"I wanna go to San Diego,
I wanna go y no puedo..."

    Love this.

    Default Manu Clandestino

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcxhlJHAN4U

    "Clandestino"

    My translation --

Alone I go with my grief
    Alone with my struggle
    Running is my destiny
    To hide from the law

    Lost in the heart
    Of the Great Babylon
They called me the illegal one
    Because I carry no papers

I pass to a city in the north
    I went there to work
I left my old life behind
    Between Gibraltar and Ceuta

I am a ray on the sea
    A ghost in the city
    My life is prohibited
    So says the authority

Alone I go with my grief
    Alone goes my hardship
    Running is my destiny
    Because I carry no papers

    Lost in the heart
    Of the Great Babylon
They called me the illegal one

    I am the broken law*

    Mano Negra, Clandestine!
    Peruvian Clandestine!
    African Clandestine!
    Marijuana, Illegal!

    *
"Yo soy el quiebra ley" (Manu is playing with the words here -- It's not, "I have broken the law," but rather something like "the law is broken" but the first person being the subject -- Yo soy -- "I am" -- "the broken law")

What are you listening to right now...

The murmur of people talking in the hallway and courtyard... a passing motor-scooter ... the sound of high-heels on floor-tiles... another scooter... the gentle hum of my laptop... wind blowing through the leaves of the tree outside my office window... a girl's voice, more distinct than the rest... the diesel engine of a truck....

Most of New York, a half globe away, sleeps on...
