Thread: Parking in Hoboken

    Default Parking in Hoboken

We're probably going to live in the south -eastern part of town.
Is street parking impossible to find as I hear?
Any garages that have decent monthly prices?
    Any other solutions?
I need the car to go to work.

    No, no and no.

Parking is difficult. Get your name on the list and see if you can (eventually) get into the town lots (B, D and G I believe). they are the cheapest, but it took me 16 months to get in myself.

Aside from that, there are garages all over, but they all cost upwards of $225 a month. The only thnig I can say is use the phone book orgo for a walk and start asking around.

If a place is too far for you to walk to, most likely you would not want it for a daily commute anyway.

Sorry I did not give you many specifics, but to give you an idea, I have been in the same garage for about 7 years now even though it is almost a mile walk to it. For $175 a month, I am not ready to give it up just yet...

I'm sorry NinjaHedge, I'm starting to think Hoboken is not such a great idea anymore. Granted, it's halfway between my and my wife's work places, but I'm going to start looking for a new job soon anyway.

And it seems there are cheaper places in Brooklyn, nice areas, and the parking not as bad as in Hoboken. Or even if it is, I can get a garage spot and still we'd be saving money.............

    No offense taken.

But with brooklyn, you really have to compare to teh areas that are similar. Park Slope, Caroll Gardens and Brooklyn Heights.

You can get a spot in Queens too, but a lot of it looks a lot like Jersey City (nothing really bad with that, but some areas better than others).

Cars in Hoboken, or anywhere near the city, will cost you money, or effort, or both.

    GL!

    thanks for the tips.

I just realized I have to factor in the toll (s) for my commute to my current job in Teterboro New Jersey if we move in Brooklyn. I also have no idea when or where I am going to work at my next job...

    but here's the equation:

    Money
    Brooklyn: |---------------------|Hoboken:

    Apartment+ |---------------------|Apartment+
    Tolls |----------------------------|Garage

    Time
    Brooklyn |--------------------------------|Hoboken

    Commute+ |------------------------------| Commute+
Finding Street Parking |-------------------|Walking to Garage

There is a building in Hoboken, Hudson square, that has some apts at decent prices, i.e. under 2000 and also on-site parking, but we couldn't find any available for September 1st, when we intend to move.

You have to do an aggressive search for an apartment. The places you mentioned, like Hudson Place are kind of limited and are definitely not rent controlled.

Find a place as a stepping stone and don't stop looking noce you get here. I was lucky (in price and location, not in Landlord) when I first came. I also found an outdoor lot, 8 years ago, for $150 a month.

Teterboro airport is relatively close to Hoboken, just a short hop down 495->3->46. Maybe 20 minutes if you are lucky to beat the rush (my guess, it has been a while, I will have to check the map to confirm).

But I will just not lie to you, finding parking in Hoboken is expensive. The boroughs are the same, if you want a nice area. Teh further out you go, the easier parking becomes, but the commute would get worse and worse for a trans-islander.

Do not get discouraged, just realize it is not going to be easy and maybe you will get lucky and it WILL be easy...

I thought Teterborough went between 46 and 17....

    Ah, it is..

My bad though, you would have to double back on 46. My route would take you to the mall!!

(So would 17, but a different mall!!!!!)

Bergen county for most of it!

(I just remembered driving by the airfield when I was on 46, I forgot that that was EAST of 17, not west.....)

actually I would try 495-3-17-120-local streets with the last short stretch on 46W.

I wouldn't mind a walk through Hoboken every day if it saves time when compared to driving from Brooklyn, but the overall prices just seem higher in Hoboken.
I wouldn't have to pay tolls to get to work, but my wife would need a PATH card or bus pass.

PATH is cheap. I think something liek $48 a month to get in. Bus is now at $78 I believe (126).

So compared to a $6 a day charge for the bridges/tunnels....... Peanuts.

    I think the 40 trip is $48, I didn't see a monthly pass option.

    Same diff, really.

People SAY they will be going to the city more often, but they end up just staying in Hoboken (or just doing the city after work while they are still there) than not.

So for $1.20 each way, it is still prety cheap.

well we just got a place in uptown Hoboken for $1800. It's big! (currently used as a 3 bedroom). There seems to be plenty of parking garages and lots around, I am sure prices are not that bad.
Not close to the PATH but oh well, at least my commute driving to work will be short!
