    Default PM Spam suggestion.

    Suggestion.

After receiving a random PM asking me to "please read my book and tell me what you think" from a totally anonymous, 0 post user, I am going to pitch this out and see if it agrees with any of you and if it can be done.

Can you make giving PM's (at the very least STARTING a PM) a priveledge that is granted after, say, 5 posts?

It is minor, but it would at least give the admins time to see if a user is a spammer before they try to do a random CTRL-V-By of the users on the site.....

    Just wondering....

I got the book take-a-look pitch too. That kind of stuff always makes me think of Bill Hicks:

"By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing-- kill yourself." LOL

I got that PM too. I agree with Ninjahedge, but I would make the posts higher than 5. Sending PMs to people is a very personal action, especially on this forum, and at least basic familiarity with who you're sending a PM to is, IMO, important.

    I got the PM too.

Is there a way to establish how many people were in receipt of the PM?

Myself as well received the message.

I got it too, but the member had already been banned and so I deleted it without having read it.

We discussed this in the Moderator Forum.

Edward said that forum permissions are based on usergroups - Senior Users, Forum Veterans, etc. There is no usergroup for 5 posts.

We agreed that the occurrence is rare, so not a problem.

If you receive any suspicious PMs, notify the moderators, and the user will be banned.

While PM spam is, indeed, rare here, spam/porn posting by brand-new members is not. Another forum in which I participate that's also using vBulletin v. 3.6.8 avoids this problem entirely by automatically preventing members with fewer than 5 posts from including links in posts. Is there a reason why that feature hasn't been turned on at WNY?

I think they have to make another category for that.

Add in a group called "Newbie" or "Greenhorn" or something NYC/Immigration history relevant..... (w/o being degrading, of course!).

Make that group people that have less than 5 or 10 posts.

No blog, no PM, no links/pics.

It would have to be something that still gave people enough freedom to want to stay, but restrict those spammers and spam-bots from coming in easily.

We all know they will find ways around it, but until then, sticking your finger in the dyke may help prevent some leakage. (It would probably be better than calling inthe ACoE!!!! )

I got the PM as well. Cheeky b***er! Needs to be tied to the main mast and given a lashing.

Certain amount of spam seems to be unavoidable. Every method to combat spam has some drawbacks. Making 5 or 10 posts requirement will not stop spam - spammer will have to spend just a couple of minutes more to make those 5-10 posts.

It might stop most spammers if the policy was not enunciated. How many spammers would have the persistence to try ten posts unless they felt assured of success after ten posts?

Btw, I got the PM too. Who didn't?

Yeah, but it would also stop people who want to post a link to their vacation pictures.

I've been online twice when two different spam PMs were sent, (1) for a movie and (2) for a book.

Both were banned relatively quickly after that (as I channeled the full strength of the Moderator powers - which I'm still learning.)

If anyone is not familiar with the online user feature: If you need to know what Moderator is online, click on the hyperlink back to the "Community" aka WNY Forum. All online users are listed on the bottom. Moderators highlighted in red. Forward any PM spam to the ones online and / or Moderators you are familiar with.

Not sure if that helps anyone.
