Default Outer boroughs: Visit to Red Hook

I see that you're visiting the outer boroughs and that makes me think Red Hook might be in order if you're up for a rugged experience.

Red Hook is a bit industrial though it has a rep for the next frontier of real estate development - there's a great Fairway Market near the Red Hook Water Taxi landing and an Ikea is about to open (not sure that's a good thing - I prefer industrial red hook).

Regardless, there's a nice park on the water - Louis J Valentino Park & Pier

Or how about great key lime pie from Steve's Authentic:

I liked the key lime pie on a stick:

Red Hook Bait & Tackle is a nice local bar where you can chill out from your hiking:

Here's the Columbia Street Esplanade - it's a bit closer to the city and Brooklyn Heights:

In May (I realize you're coming in March - next time!), you can visit the Waterfront Museum - it's right near Fairway and the water taxi.

One other idea.. take the water taxi from South Street Seaport to Red Hook and back. It's only $5 each way for adult (tell them you're going to Fairway) - at least it was last summer. This service may be suspended because of "winter".
