Yes 400 PAS will rise on that corner.
With respect to The Drake, that was simply a victime of the economy.
The photo of Madison in the 1970s simply depicts urban decline.

Here are some great shots found over at ForumNYC. These are Flickr hosted photos from member Weezer. They appear to be from mid-decade.

The Port Authority, IMO the ugliest building in NYC
Marquee may date this to 1977-78

Great pics. LondonLawyer would have a heart attack, especially considering how much history was knocked down in the few years prior.
Look at all that trash on the streets. I love all the small shops though, not a Duane Reade or bank branch in sight.
It was a big nasty mess back then. You can feel the energy of the city in all those shots. Great to have been around to play in it.
Everyone was getting laid like crazy back then.
I thought I saw Richard Pryor in post # 213, pic # 7 from the top.
What's that beautiful pedimented building? Is that somewhere on 8th? What a f..ing shame that it's gone.

Thanks, Fabrizio.
What a crime.
This beautiful building on the left is another devastating loss.

That shot is from 1949.... but the title of that film would have been right at home on any Times Square movie theatre in the 1970's...
