Long time reader of the forums (mostly the skyscraper bits), and i will be moving to Maspeth soon, quite possibly. I am in College Point right now.
Anyone have a general idea of what Maspeth is like? Good dining and shopping? Most importantly, what the commute to mid-town Manhattan is like. I see a few buses run to a L train stop.
Right now my commute from College Point is about an hour, so hopefully maspeth isnt much worse.

Depends what part of Maspeth. It used to take me over an hour to commute to Grand Central, but I would walk to the Metro. Ave. stop, take the M to the L and then take the L into like 14th Street and grab the 4, 5 or 6. This was well over 12 years ago though, so can't be to sure what it is now.
Never really liked buses, so can't help you there, sorry.

Many Maspeth commuters take the Q67 bus to subway connections in Hunters Point or Queens Plaza. Bus ride is 15-20 minutes; subway to first stop in Manhattan is 5-10 minutes.
I don't know anyone who takes a bus to the L train.
Plenty of comfort food along Grand Avenue. Good meals can be found at the various Irish pubs such as Connolly's, and the Newport Diner offers great breakfasts.
One major grocery store (Super Stop & Shop) and a few smaller ones.
Main shopping center is the Queens Center Mall, easily accessed in a few minutes by the Q59 bus.
Send me a PM for more comments.

Isn't it the Q58 that goes to Queens Blvd., not the Q59?

Q58 and Q59 both travel from Maspeth to Queens Blvd via Grand Avenue. The Q59 turns at Queens Blvd and terminates in Rego Park. The Q58 crosses Queens Blvd as it heads to downtown Flushing.
