The death knell for the Meatpacking District. It's now one more mall for the guido's from Jersey.
The landmark diner is closing in a few days, so anybody who wants one last shot, go.
Hubby and I made reservations a couple of weeks ago and went last night, at that point the wait for walk-ins was an hour to sit at the bar . . . so people were spilled out onto the street, waiting, it was like a little Meatpacking District block party.

Will Florent stay open through Bastille Day?
Non. Last day = 6/29 (Pride Sunday).![]()
Very sad.
Bye Florent. Another great, unique late night food option gone. Lord knows the diners are disappearing too.
Many of the ones that remain are only open 24 hrs on thurs., fri., and sat. when it used to be every night. Where will we eat after leaving the clubs?
Never mind that last question...the clubs in Manhattan are closing too.
The bottega by my place does good tacos.
If there's no late night food then what do folks do to take the "edge" off?
Yikes
Makes me think back to some late night forays up and down the supermarket aisles during college ...
The flourescent lighting made for some very strange visuals.
Back in the day it was Kiev in the East Village...those blintzes could soak up anything at 4:30AM...not matter what you ingested.
What's it called now? American Grill? Ewww. In disgusting Helvetica signage to boot. Talk about loss of identity and character....
Florent going away... just like El Teddy's gone....it just ain't right.![]()
I suppose Hector's Cafe, tucked under the highline near the Standard Hotel for 40 years, won't last.
Opens at 2AM. Bring cash (not too much needed).

The Kiev!! You're breakin' my heart. I miss that place. We used to go there after the clubs all the time and fill up on delicious hearty food.
I heard they tried to bump the rent from $6K/month to $16K/month. The terrible thing is that some wannabe chic place will open in that location, spends tons of money on a renovation and fail horribly. After a failure or two, the site will sit empty for years. So many of these new restaurants in meatpacking are gonna have a tough time making it paying market rent because there is just too much competition.
Some things never change ...

Responding to yesterday's news that his former landlord, Joanne Lucas,
would be turning Florent back to the R&L Restaurant and reopening on
Tuesday, Florent Morellet tells us he's happy with the idea, which he first
heard about a few weeks ago. It's not a conspiracy, she's not just trying
to rake in the dough while she waits for a retail buyer. Florent contends
that the decision was an emotional one:
"I'm not totally surprised. There's something very specialFlorent, who says he has already come to terms with closing the restaurant,
about this neighborhood in the Meatpacking District...the
property has been in the family with Joanne for three
generations and they have an emotional relationship with the
building. I was curious to see what would happen when push
came to shove with Joanne when the big bucks came to the
door. It would have meant tearing down the inside ...
This was not a decision based on capitalism."
urges his fans to give Lucas, his former opponent in court, a chance:
"I think it's wonderful. This is the second best option. It'sAs for the menu, Florent says it's not trademarked and she can serve
going to be a mom and pop store. I'm telling everybody, 'Go
and try them out'. I wish well anybody working with her."
whatever she likes. If she wanted to use his name however, she would
need to talk to his lawyers. "There's not going to be maps on the wall and
I'm not going to be in it but we'll see. I really wish them well."
