Default Lincoln Square Synagogue - by Cetra/Ruddy

The designs for the new Lincoln Square Synagogue (LSS) are here:

    http://www.lss.org/construction-designs.htm#Designs

Against the dreary backdrop of Lincoln Towers anything would look fabulous, but this is quite the eye candy... A great addition to this stretch of Amsterdam Ave. which is yet to benefit from the revival of Broadway and Columbus in the Lincoln Square Area.

Anybody has seen drawings for 200 Amsterdam Ave., where the current LSS is located? The land swap was supposed to bring a residential tower to this space, but I haven't been able to find any specs.

... but as of mid-July 2008, it's not quite there yet...

    Thumbs up

Thanks for this. I agree, nice addition.
As for the tower all I've heard is...

"West 67th-69th streets at Amsterdam Avenue
American Continental Properties is reportedly in negotiation with two synagogues to buy air rights that would enable them to build a tower as high as 70 stories. Without the rights, the building they propose for this site would be limited to 21 stories."

70 stories sounds like something that may have been initially envisaged for the block between 67th and 69th Streets, before the land swap. The site of the current Lincoln Square Synagogue, which occupies about half the Amsterdam Avenue frontage between 69th and 70th, is not that large. Given the technical constraints associated with a 70-story building, I doubt that it would make sense to build something that high on this particular site.

It would be good to have some info on American Continental's current thinking...

Why so deep a pit for just a synagogue church building?

BrooklynLove: I don't see any mention of a parking garage ;-)

However, the floor plan for the second level below grade has a large area "open to below", suggesting that there is an unpublished third basement level.

Some interesting notes on the glass facade, which will be made of Belgian glass and assembled in China, before being pieced together and mounted in our very UWS...

The steel for the new LSS is just reaching street level.

Virtual Tour / "walk throughs" of the Gound, Second & Third Floors of the new Lincoln Square Synagogue -- not too exciting and not showing the Sanctuary.

Their website says they've topped out but here's what it looks like just yesterday:

The "second level below grade" is actually ABOVE the "first level below grade". The "open to below" area is the high ceilinged part of the ballroom.

A recent update in the Forward on the construction of the new Lincoln Square Synagogue:

    http://www.forward.com/articles/132201/#ixzz12l5uxWh0

The gist of it is that cost overruns have led to a $17 million shortfall. The president has stepped down and work has been halted. They are looking for a venture partner or large donor. It would still take months to complete the project is money is found. This leave the site of the current synagogue in a limbo. The current site is now rented from American Continental Properties, pending completion of the new building. They could ask the synagogue to vacate the premises if they decided to build something on that land, but there is no mention of plans for redevelopment of that plot.
