'Pregnant Man' gives birth to baby girl: report

Updated Thu. Jul. 3 2008 11:24 PM ET
    CTV.ca News Staff

Thomas Beatie, who began life as a woman but underwent hormone therapy to become a man, has reportedly given birth to a girl, according to People magazine.

Beatie, 34, still has female reproductive organs and stopped taking his twice-weekly doses of testosterone ahead of his pregnancy. He said it was a natural birth, rather than by C-section.

"The only thing different about me is that I can't breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't," he told the magazine. Beatie had his breasts removed as part of his transition to a man.

The baby girl was born on June 29, according to the report.
Beatie decided to carry the baby because his wife, 46-year-old Nancy, could not become pregnant. She had a hysterectomy as a result of endometriosis.

He was impregnated through artificial insemination, using donor sperm and his own eggs, according to People magazine.

Beatie, known in tabloids as the "Pregnant Man," made an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last April. He told Winfrey he started his sex-reassignment process about 10 years ago.

He is legally a man and lives with his wife in Oregon, where they operate a T-shirt printing business.

I love how they call her "him".

The chromosomes do not lie. This is a woman. A woman that took hormones.

I don't know why so many people followed this. It is not like a genetic male went trannie and had a kid by implantation, or even more amazing if they were able to do the same with a genuine male.

This person is a female that wants to be a male. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with what they want to do, but calling her a "him" is just plain silly.

She can be a he if she wants to, but real men do not have/keep ovaries.

I can just see some unshaven blue collar guy teaching life's wisdom to his son along the lines of "Real men don't cry", "Real men drink beer" and now "Real men don't have ovaries"

    Ovaries, among other things.

The only diff is that S-he no longer has breasts and grows more hair because of hormonal injections.

If that were the case, I know a lot of Olympic sprinters that probably could have garnered the same definition not too long ago......

It would be interesting to hear a gay man's take on this story.

'Pregnant man' expecting second child: report

Updated Thu. Nov. 13 2008 2:59 PM ET
    CTV.ca News Staff

Thomas Beatie, pregnant with his second child, is seen during an interview with ABC News. Beatie spoke with the Barbara Walters for the news magazine television program 20/20.

Thomas Beatie, known around the world as the "pregnant man" who gave birth to a girl, is carrying another child, says a report.

In an interview with ABC News, Beatie said he is currently in his first trimester and his baby is due next June 12.

Born a woman, Beatie underwent hormone therapy and had his breasts removed to become a man in the late 1990s.

However, he kept his female reproductive organs and stopped taking his twice-weekly doses of testosterone ahead of his first successful pregnancy.

Beatie said in the interview that he did not start taking testosterone again after the birth so that he could get pregnant again.

He gave birth to a baby girl, named Susan, on June 29 of this year.

He decided to get pregnant the first time because his wife, 46-year-old Nancy, could not become pregnant. She had a hysterectomy as a result of endometriosis.

Beatie, 34, was impregnated through artificial insemination, using donor sperm and his own eggs. He has said he had a natural birth, not a C-section.

Beatie has written a memoir, which goes on sale this week, called "Labour of Love."

The couple also sold exclusive photos to Getty Images and were paid for their appearance in a British documentary, ABC News reported.

However, Beatie told ABC's Barbara Walters that money isn't their motivation.

"We've turned down about $2 million altogether from people wanting to do all sorts of things with us. But as far as you know, doing it for the fame, I have to say I'm infamous. I mean, who wants to be unpopular, controversial and despised?"

Beatie has now been pregnant three times, but his first experience was an unsuccessful ectopic pregnancy, which was hampered by medical complications.

Beatie has said that it was a "life-threatening event" which resulted in the loss of three embryos (he was expecting triplets) and his right fallopian tube.

He made those revelations in an interview last March with The Advocate, which is a magazine for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people.

"How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible," he told the magazine.

"Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am."

Beatie started his sex reassignment therapy about a decade ago and lives with his wife in Bend, Oregon. The couple operates a T-shirt printing business.
