Thread: World's most highrise city rises

  1. #1

Default World's most highrise city rises

Shanghai has an unofficial population of 20 million, with 140 million
in its CSA. In a decade there will be 30 million in the city, growing by a million a year in the city proper,
though in the next few years it will join up with the Hangzhou conurbation, among others, and counting 70 million in a contiguous megalopolis.

    thanx to Staff@ www.skyscrapercity.com

Shanghai now has 4000 highrises over 400ft and another 1000 currently being built.
These pics are from this year,
as the skyline changes every few months. Alongside the highrise construction vast swathes of the older city are
being restored (after a decade of destruction) following the commercial success of the Xintiandi district.
The worlds largest, fastest growing metro system is also under construction with 500km of track within 2 years,
overtaking London's (though Beijings will be larger and Guangzhous will be 2000km by 2018)

Plans for next year, the shortest one on the right is taller than the Empire State Bdg

Due to the commercial success of the Xintiandi and Old City districts vast areas of the city are now being restored
(its not all greedy construction). Hongkou Jewish quarter and the French Concession are in the makeover:

beware this is misleading, NYC has 17 million (not 8.1 million) in the city contiguous
    Today show in Shanghai:

^ Zupermaus, do you have any statistics for the 3 towers planned for next year?

the shorter two have already been built, the completed one with the trapezoid hole in it will be for a short time the worlds tallest building, the Shanghai World Financial Center, 1614ft (492m), the ziggurat/pagoda-esque one is the Jin Mao Tower at 1380 ft, (421m). The tallest one to be built next year will be the Shanghai Center 1,903 ft (580m):

A NIMBY living in cities like Shanghai and Hong Kong would be pretty suicidal.

I think most NIMBYS live out in the suburbs don't they?

In most parts of Asia i don't think locals would have much of a say in whats built on their doorstep anyway, though i may be wrong.

Most NIMBYs in New York actually live in "NEW YORK"

And unlike in Asia, these fools actually have a big influence here in NYC in what gets to be built.

And I actually think that this is good for the city and for the country that they don't have much to say. Much of early New York was built where businesses wanted to build. If we had the same laws and regulations as today, I am pretty sure such landmarks as Chrysler Building and Empire State Buildings would have been blocked, or at least would have had hard time being approved. Free enterprise works and works quite well. If a developer paid for the land and wants to invest money to build something, who am I to tell him how and what to build (even if he is doing it next to my house)?

    Unhappy It does look depressing.

I'm not seeing much in the way of parks here.
