    DESCRIPTION

    Introduction

... ARQVA, the new Spanish National Subaquatic Archeology Museum of Cartagena offers, through its cutting-edge architecture, an innovative image of the new institution. The architecture of the new museum is an emblem for the Center, which provides a seat appropriate to develop the skills and responsibilities commensurate with its current mission.

... The building also represents a major contribution to the city of Cartagena, which is incorporated as a first-class cultural facilities. The construction of the museum on the port area, privileged urban space, is established on the memory of the city, because of his extraordinary relationship with the sea.

... The idea of the sea permeates the architectural language of the building, which combines the concepts of it underground, submerged it, linking it to water and the city.

    History of a project

... In 1995 the Port Authority of Cartagena, in an ambitious land reclamation project, offered the Spanish governement of Madrid lands located in the commercial wharf of Alfonso XII has been erected where the new headquarters of the Museum, following the project's architect Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra (Spanish National Architecture Award 2005).

... The construction of the building, whose foundation stone was set in 2002, has been run by the company FCC Construction SA, winning the contest convened for that purpose by the Ministry of Culture. Finally, after suffering several delays, last November 12, 2007 was signed the act of receipt of the building for Spanish Ministry of Culture.

... The Museum project, of great architectural quality, was selected to be exhibited in New York, within the exhibition On-Site: Spanish New Architecture dedicated to contemporary Spanish architectural designs, exhibited throughout 2006 in the MoMA.

    General design

... The building surface to emerge with two volumes, including providing a place from which descends a wide ramp leading to the visitor inside the museum. The architectural form focuses on the concept of it underwater, and aims to ensure visitors to penetrate the depths to access the submerged heritage that is the subject of his presentation.

... The building is conceived from two volumes faced: the first, so prismatic and opaque to the outside, is available in parallel to the dock, the second as a skylight for the Museum excavated, irregular in plant and greater transparency, one faces, forming an open space between them as a plaza that serves as the lobby of the building and lobby of the museum.

... Essential values of the building:

    • The relationship with the environment of the city of Cartagena and its relationship with the sea. The building represents the approach to the sea by the city through a series of speeches in the spring Alfonso XII, reserved until only a few years ago to port facilities and operations. The 'cantil' of the Alfonso XII Pier, built in front of the walls of Carlos III, since 1872 is the new physical edge of the city. In their place new buildings, such as ARC or the Auditorium of Cartagena will generate a major focus of activity that will revitalize both the bay and the city.

    • The relationship of the building with the underwater world. The architecture of the museum is consistent with the location and characteristics of their environment. Outside this context would lose its meaning and purpose. The Museum is located in a field filler, an area where it was before the sea. The visitor enters penetrating into the interior of the earth, referring to the underwater world, provenance of submerged cultural heritage. Materials and exposed again to their place of origin, now under the layer of granite from the old port quayside.
    Construction materials

... The building brings a wealth of materials in keeping with the architectural form, design and the contemporary values of the project. The use of tinted concrete in the insurgent, the basalto use of Chinese in the pavement, as well as steel and glass, providing the image of a building in the forefront of museum architecture today.

    Program uses

... The new museum has about 6,000 m2, of which about 35% is for displaying collections, to have a permanent exhibition hall of 1,600 m2, and a special room designed to accommodate 500 m2 and the future Dynamic Temporary Exhibition Center.

... To these big spaces must be added the almost 1,000 m2 for the preservation of the rich and varied fund that holds the center, with a large anforario, an exceptionally compact room and visited a warehouse where the collections are displayed have no room in the Permanent Exhibition, ordered by wrecks or deposits.

... The Conservation Area will have adequate facilities to house the various documentary records, whether or photographic layout, which along with its modern library, designed to two heights, and providing indirect natural lighting, will facilitate the task of researchers and all those people interested in learning about our heritage.

... The Museum will also an important area for the Department of Broadcasting with classrooms equipped to develop the various workshops and activities. In this line of training and required scientific popularization, the museum will have a Hall equipped with the latest technological advances that make it a multipurpose space for holding events of all kinds.

... Similarly, the museum has space to accommodate services such as cafeteria, shop and other facilities designed to make the museum is not only a place of exhibition but also for cultural encounters of the city of Cartagena.

    CONCERT HALL of AGUILAS

    Murcia Community. Spain

... another nicely clone of Porto´s Casa da Musica ...

    EBV
    Fabrizio Barozzi & Alberto Veiga

    TECHNICAL INFORMATION

    Client: Aguilas Town Hall
    Surface: 6,000 sq. m.
    Budget: € 9 M
    Structural engineer: Boma SL

    DESCRIPTION

... The aim of the competition was the proposal of an auditorium for the municipality and the landscaping of a plot situated on the waterfront of Aguilas.

... The project rises as a response to the particularity of the site: on one hand, the need of a relation with the urban fabric that grows towards the city centre while on the other hand a preservation of the expressive nature of the surrounding landscape.

... In this contraposition, the project defines the tensions that articulate it and allow it to form a coherent response to the surrounding conditions. Through this contraposition, the project is defined as a dialetic, sober and powerful reflection, between the urban artificiality and the natural forms.

... The project appears as a modeled mass according to the tensions of the different spaces around it. Toweards the city, it offers an urban side; clean, ordered facades, that recreate a building bock towards the streets.

... Towards the sea, it becomes more site specific in a spatial search that interprets the configuration of landscape and geography. The project, towards the bay is modelled with broad concave surfaces that strongly relate to the surrounding landscape. It sits like a candle facing the sea, formed according to the coast's profile and opens up towards the horizon.

    LAS TORRES DE COTILLAS
    NEW CITY HALL

    ... flashlight building ...

    adhoc>arquitectos

    TECHNICAL INFORMATION

    Location: Las Torres de Cotillas
    Surface: 6,500 sq. m.
    Budget: € 4,9 M
    Structural engineer: Ploder

    DESCRIPTION

... The City Council of Las Torres de Cotillas currently occupies an old building that does not meet the conditions necessary to accommodate all the units that the rapid growth of the locality requires. Therefore the current city council convened an international competition to select a team to develop a project execution for a new headquarters.

... The plot on which projects the building is located on D'Estoup street, the place is currently occupied by some old industrial complexes that must be demolished. The site is a rectangular shape, dimensions of 55.3 meters and 78.2 meters and the plot surface is 4,326.51 sq. m.

... It has been almost three cuts on an isotropic plane and has lowered the central part of the same depressed for a place in respect of the street and protected traffic, with a great source that accentuates its centrality. On this new topography is placed on the municipality building, light, bright and functional, like a large flashlight during the day will be white and vibrant because of the light absorbed by the lattice of the material that surrounds it and in the evening becomes a great source of diffuse light that illuminates the environment gently.

... The square is designed as a new public garden, green grass, benches, footpaths stone masonry, a central fountain, night lighting . The slight incline of the ramps that descend toward the entrance to the town hall permit to convert the square into a ideal place for holding mass public events and receptions. Particular attention has been paid in the design of the imposing presence of the old brick chimney that will be preserved.

... The building that will house the main municipal units, is designed using the criteria of standardization and modulation required in any office building to make it a great constructive simplicity and maximum flexibility functional, taking on the predictable changes that the program could suffer over time.

    UNIVERSITARY RESIDENCE
    of the
SISTERS OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER
    Rector José Loustau Street. Murcia

    ... renovation ...

    Architect
    Enrique Tallés

    DESCRIPTION

... Close to the city’s old university, the 4646 m2 city block is owned by the nuns. Until 2001 the women students’ residence and the sisters’ home were housed in a building in the southern part of the plot The need for greater capacity and better installations to upgrade the services provided and the poor condition of the existing building led to its demolition and the construction of an entirely new residence. The two keys to the project were treating the entire block as a single unit and dialogue to foster coexistence.

... At the end of the 19th century, when the original building was constructed, the site was on the edge of the city. The city has grown since then and the relative location of the plot has altered radically. What was once a borderline space is now a hinge-pin between the different urban fabrics that the city has gradually shaped around it.

... Simplifying, these can be summarised under two headings: the closed city blocks of the historic city that extends to the south and west of the site and the free-standing buildings that free up the plots in the new city districts which have developed on the other two sides. This project stresses the importance of this city block in structuring the coexistence and transition between these two urban textures.

... To break down the physical and symbolic barriers, the building is lower than its predecessor, acquires two entrances and has more open spaces. Plays on transparency have been created to open up the perspectives, the exterior hints at its inner life, the side and end façades have a similar treatment, the roof is considered a fifth façade and the views are directed towards all the surroundings.

... The layout of the brief is based on a cloister-like design, a large interior open space that is off-centre if the building alone is taken into account but is central with respect to the plot as a whole. This open space, together with the small gardens dotted around the grounds and the different ways of treating heights, transparencies, play of openings, orientations etc., strengthens the connections between the different areas and between these and the surroundings by combining the private and social dimensions of the space and creating landscape. A 3x3x3 three-dimensional virtual grid provided the modular reference (with an appropriate degree of flexibility) for designing the solutions to the various uses demanded by the general brief. The collective spaces, the basis on which the building hinges, organise the layout of the individual spaces.

... The design is summed up by an image of two L-shapes facing each other: one is the Residence building and the other is associated with the open spaces. The whole forms an approximately square shape. The north edge is a service road for supplies, vehicles, rubbish collection, etc. The west side has a small park, reaching to the line of the south façade, followed by an area where the ground slopes down to a sports track with a grandstand and changing rooms, sports equipment store etc. The remaining sides are occupied by the building itself, where the entrance and communications core is placed at the corner of the two perpendicular wings that house the residential part of the brief. Two entrances lead to a shared hall. One is reached by a ramp from the square and the other by stairs from José Loustau street

    UNIVERSITARY SCHOOL of
    LABOR RELATIONS and SOCIAL WORK
    Espinardo Universitary Campus. Murcia

... three buidings in one ...

Mtnez Gadea, Mejías Villatoro & Sánchez Merina

    DESCRIPTION

... The University of Murcia in 1998 convened a contest for the construction of 3 buildings: the School of Labor Relations, the School of Social Work and one more of common areas. The contest was resolved in 1999, winning the contest Mtnez Gadea, Mejías Villatoro & Sánchez Merina proposal. Finally, building was completed in summer 2001.

... The winner proposal decided to combine the three buildings in one, articulating the overlap of the two centers through a large terrace that incorporates the common areas and look to the city of Murcia.

... In this way the user identifies clearly the two Universitary Schools. The building is adapted to the steeply sloping terrain and leaves transversal steps that it is bound to the surrounding forest.

... The five floors of the Universitary School are structured in a band for teaching and other for offices and one axis of communication services in the middle with lifts and scalators conection inside. In the parking, a zig-zag forging recomposed the original slope and entering the building in each of its levels, setting up outlets close to the pine forest.

    CARBONELL MESEGUER & MORENO PÉREZ

    TECHNICAL INFORMATION

    Building Surface: 26,030 sq.m.
    Budget: € 8,4 M
    Completion: 2001

    DESCRIPTION

... Located on the campus of Espinardo, this major center of more than 26.000m ² in area, seeks through its geometry establish guidelines for the management of the surrounding territory. The articulation of his four blocks and linear parallel is made through a network that provides three-dimensional circulations is conceptual and organizational skeleton of the building. One of the most outstanding characteristics of this building is its facade, settled depending on weather conditions imposed by their distance climatic guidance imposed by their distance orientation, such as curtain walls permeable in playing a leading role galvanized steel.

... From the place where the building sits, highlights the somewhat modified and highlight the absence of preconditions of urbanization, circumstances that reinforced the intention of the project, the network of circulations of the building spreads over its foreign and vice versa, taking into account the different access solutions provided. The building was raised in this way as architecture permeable, and without access to clear obstacles in their paths.

... The organizer element of the system at its inception, was the classroom, as the basic unit of this matrix space. Three different sizes, is grouped into four corps linear building that generate recurring in parallel. Thus, larger classrooms occupy the west end of the blocks, while the medium and smaller ones are inserted into the central area; finally departmental offices, double surgery, define the eastern third of each of the four blocks. The units departments, are characterized by having a direct access from the outside of the blocks, offering a circuit of smaller scale alternative to the lead. In this sense across these four bodies linear and along the west facade of the combination, a body of great depth occupies the first floors and gathers the pieces noble as the library or assembly hall

... The provision of north-south facades of the four blocks to cross the street invited to use as curtain wall surround the building, clean the north and south protected by parasols. In turn the power of the concrete material made it an ideal material to coexist with the wall of glass and steel on the inside. Overlaying one on the other allows to have everything in sight, nothing remains hidden, offering simultaneous appearance of lightness and strength to be sought.

POLARIS WORLD REAL ESTATE CO. HEADQUARTERS BUILDING
    Balsicas, Torre Pacheco. Murcia Community.

... here are designed today the best Golf&Resorts in Europe ...

    Architects:
CAVAS GARCÍA, LOPÉZ MUÑOZ & ORTÍN AVILÉS

    DESCRIPTION

... It has solved the distribution of offices emphasizing the shape of the plot through the rupture of his corner with a large longitudinal tear that building the party into two, allowing a lighting of the central part hampered by the vast breadth of the plot.

... Through it is the general access of the building, concentrated in a large volume where the entrances are located at various levels, serving as a transitional space between public and private sectors, and through which continues the great rip, to be part twists and setting a distortion of the perspective of the courtyard accentuated by the willingness of the rails of glass that create a game of reflexes and special transparencies, emphasized by a cut in white immaculate paraments against the large glass skylight. This thus becomes ripping the heart of the building, the centerpiece around which organizes the posts and work areas.

... In this large volume of access are located two lifts and one of the service areas of the building relating to the supply-elect and water over it. Prior to access generates lies the great staircase that brings us closer and discovered along the way, the large open heart of the building. At the end of the courtyard, and attached to the wall separator, we can find the emergency stairs.

... The building consists of ground floor and two story, being located on the ground floor, the show-room and the areas of sales, and using the remaining two floors for offices. The configuration of these around the yard creates two separate wings of use. Both are very large room in first floor with their respective cores of toilets, from which you access the second floor through stairs inside them, or in parallel through the kernel overseas communications mentioned above. The plant floor, in both cases, it is configured as a mezzanine of the first, always linked to it visually and spatially. This allows the floor to differentiate those areas through the spatial structure of such a ratio of more controlled, conventional height, and other more monumental proportion of which is viewed from the deck of the building

... Anxious to get the best natural lighting, the deck is itself split into two different levels creating two bands of continuous lighting and ventilation, enhancing the idea of the project matrix. This effort was formalized in parallel in the organization of different facades, building the south facade by large cloth blind and the necessary openings for the lighting of interior spaces, in contrast to the northern facade and main entrance, where the glass facades is the great player.

... In any case, the project qualifies different spaces according to their usage and search, with all available resources, make an attractive space for visitors, linked to a new concept in business organization like the company to which it is intended.

... The innovative nature of the offices, they also want to be shown on the outside. The shape and image of the building is enhanced by the use in front of only two materials: glass curtain wall sunscreen in blue with a sharp cutting and horizontal panels of aluminum in the same proportion also finished with blue in total symbiosis with the skin of glass.

    JOSE MARÍA LÓPEZ MARTÍNEZ

    DESCRIPTION

... Due to renovations within the area of emergency hospital, is building a new waiting room as a foreign flag in the vicinity of the entrance. Thus there is a somewhat unique task, so simple and attractive as it is the only functional requirement arises: Pending. Expect to be cared for, expect news about a family member, walking and taking the air to quell the anxiety. Then the decision is taken by the architect to do so light and transparent, limited to just a glass so that you do not separate of what we expect.

... The program is organized into two distinct bands within the same piece, a narrow focus where all services and other places where the waiting area consists only of physical space and a longitudinal bank.

... Designed as a large fold cantilever, is bent on its end with a gesture, to match the height of the canopy covering the entrance of emergency exists.

... The module is in full board with a high-pressure laminated white color used even on the pavement continued to shape the fold. The band service is formalized through a translucent glass. The entire piece rests on a plinth of mesh used to ventilate and record housing facilities, while the building to accommodate the steep slope.

    DESCRIPTION

... The LAIB, the first phase of a larger building, establishing the beginning of a series through empty space extensions of the pedestrian established by the Special Plan for Health Sciences Campus at the University of Murcia. The building bears a potential growth in the longitudinal direction and latent in the layout of the buildings that provides the aforementioned plan.

... The entrance is the first vacuum, it is appropriate to do so inside the building and communicating with the second vacuum which is the union with a future expansion. Thus, the building began its journey to enter an area that collects upright on the ground floor of the hollow light that pierces the facade Northeast. The spaces next to the big holes to fill the void of vertical interior light up the most significant of the departments of levels first, second and third.

... LAIB building is constructed by overlapping layers of horizontal stone 50 centimeters thick, the holes are carved into them and also result from their group: the vacuum owes its existence to the full as in the interior spaces.

    NEW LIBRARY
    of TORRE PACHECO
    Library St., Torre Pacheco.
    Murcia Community.

... a new concept of library was born in Europe ...

    MARTÍN LEJÁRRAGA

    DESCRIPTION

... The new library is a project by architect Martin Lejarraga that follows the line that the Municipality of Torre Pacheco has been proposed to provide the town a new image of beauty, present and modern, in connection with the latest trends in contemporary architecture in Spain and Europe.

... The official inauguration took place on January 23, 2007, with the completion of a large human chain that moved 365 books of the ancient library to the new one. In this chain participated actively architect Martin Lejárraga together with children from schools in the town of Torre Pacheco.

... With an area of 2,204 sq.m., the building has a contemporary image that will respond to the new content and applications defendants in a library. This is a unique floor in the semi which provide for varying levels depending on usage, connected by soft ramp by which visitors can glide as if it were water slides. It has an area of silence for opening night, rooms for conferences and courses, and areas of study and reading. Besides the uses themselves of a library, the building has an art gallery exhibition, with independent access, single space that poke above the general topography of plot planned

... But undoubtedly the distinctive feature of the library is the Park Reading over 18,000 sq.m. It has created a forest of 800 sq. m., a courtyard reading of artificial grass, another with tiles of recycled rubber, sporting tracks for the practice of badminton and paddle, and slides that drawing topographic forms of the corrugated roof of the building permit slip through it. There is no shortage of colored sand dunes, and gardens in this new green lung of Tuatapere.

... It also has a skate park, walks based textures to make gymkhanas, and driving games for older can make a gentle exercise and a greenhouse for small crops and a park where you can experiment with acoustic voice.

    DESCRIPTION

... A team of four architectural practices (Modostudio, Adhoc, Barbarela and Bestbefore) have won an international competition to design the Ciudad del Medio Ambiente - or Environment City - in Santomera in the Spanish Community of Murcia.

... The project will be built in a former quarry and will feature buildings addressing ecological issues. Modostudio are based in Italy while the other three practices are Spanish.

... The competition envisions the recovery of a stone quarry in the region of the Murcia. The project, besides generating a high quality environmental recovery, creates a series of spaces to house activities dedicated to profound environmental themes: a true city of ecology. The area is subdivided in to various architectonically unique zones that accommodate respectively:

    1. Center of Ecological Formation
    2. Regional School of Hunting and Fishing
    3. School of Fire Prevention and Extinction
    4. Forest Museum
