    MEDGAZ
    Algerian-European
    Gas Pipeline via Spain
Beni Saf (ALG) to Almería (SPA)

    ... deepwater gas pipeline ...
    Developers
    CEPSA & SONATRACH

    DESCRIPTION

MEDGAZ builds and will operate a new deepwater gas pipeline from Beni Saf, in the Algerian coast, to Almería, in the Spanish coast. Medgaz will supply natural gas to the European market, thus helping to meet the growing need for this hydrocarbon. MEDGAZ is an international and multidisciplinary project that provides the most direct and cost-effective way of supplying natural gas to Southern Europe

MEDGAZ is a consortium of five international companies: SONATRACH, CEPSA, IBERDROLA, ENDESA and GDF SUEZ, all of which have a long and proven track record in the gas business and are renowned worldwide for their technical expertise and financial strength.

The idea of building a direct gas pipeline between Algeria and Europe arose in the 1970’s. In order to study the feasibility of a subsea link, seismic surveys, geological tests, visual inspections of the seabed and oceanographical studies were all conducted.
Nevertheless, the technical limitations at that time prevented the construction and operation of an ultra deepwater gas pipeline.

These limitations however had disappeared by August 2000, when CEPSA and Sonatrach signed a protocol agreement in order to resume the project to build an Algerian-European gas pipeline, which had been considered back in the 1970’s.
In February 2001, the “Sociedad para el Estudio y Promoción del Gasoducto Argelia-Europa, vía España S.A.” (Company to Study and Build the Algerian-European Gas Pipeline via Spain, S.A.”) (MEDGAZ), was founded

    PROJECT C10
    Cartagena Refinery Expansion
    Escombreras Valley, Cartagena
    Murcia Community

    ... the biggest industrial investment
in the history of Spain ...
    Developer
    REPSOL

    DESCRIPTION

Repsol continues its ambitious investment plan to increase refining capacity, raise the conversion level and improve safety, the environment and the efficiency of its installations. In the medium and long term, the reactivation of the world economy, signs of which were already being seen in 2009, and which will become more consolidated in 2010, according to the predictions of various international bodies, assures the profitability of the company's projects.

The enlargement and increased conversion at the Cartagena refinery, and the conversion project at the Petronor refinery (URF) are the key points in this plan. During 2009, progress was made in both projects according to plan, enabling the start-up of the new installations, scheduled for mid-2011, to remain on target.

In 2009, the European Investment Bank awarded Petronor a loan of 400 million euro for the construction and exploitaion of the URF (Unidad Reductora de Fuelóleo) project. The first phase of funding, for a sum of 300 million Euros, was signed on 23 July.

The enlargement of the Cartagena Refinery is one of the key initiatives of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan. The investment of 3.262 billion Euros will make this complex one of the most modern in the world, and will double its capacity to 220,000 barrels/day. The main elements in this project include a hydrocracker, a coker, atmospheric and vacuum distillation units and desulphuration and hydrogen plants.

Considerable progress was made in 2009, as per the plan. The refinery enlargement is regarded very favourably by local people and government, as it is an element dynamising the Region of Murcia. In Repsol's committment to this region, it has promoted the hiring of local businesses, and 46% of the workers are from the region.

Some 3,000 people are already working on its construction, which is scheduled to finish in 2011. This project will maximise the production of clean fuels for transport and will provide jobs for more than 6,000 people during construction.

Once in operation, it will generate about 700 jobs. More than 50% of the products of the complex will be distillate media, which will contribute to significantly reducing the deficit of these products in Spain.

Dr.T, what is exactly "cuatro calas environmental complex"?

    (spa)
No entiendo exactamente que es ese proyecto. Es decir, ¿complejo medioambiental? ¿con qué fin?
Tengo una gran afinidad a esa zona y la conozco muy bien. Me gustaria si puedes explicar en que consiste ese proyecto. Gracias.

Currently information about this project is limited, but it seems that it will be integrated by 3 bioclimatic buildings located within the mountains around Cuatro Calas site. One of them, as I have understood, it would be a hotel and the rest will have a role similar to CEMACAM complex at Torreguil (Murcia city)

    CALAR ALTO
    ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY
    Serón, Almería.
    Andalusia Community

... the largest telescope in the continental Europe ...
    Developer
    MAX-PLANCK INSTITUT FÜR ASTRONOMIE

    DESCRIPTION

Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory is a German-Spanish observatory. Calar Alto is located on a plateau 2,168 meters high in the Sierra de Filabres (Almería). Its official name is German-Spanish Astronomical Center (CAHA) or, in German, Deutsch-Spanisches Astronomische Zentrum (DSAZ), and was founded in 1973 following an agreement between German government and Spanish. Until 2005 the observatory belonged exclusively to the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie and had only 10% of observation time for Spanish astronomers. But in 2005 it signed an agreement under which the observatory is operated jointly by the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia in Granada and the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg at a rate of 50% each.

The observatory has three telescopes: of 1.23 m, 3.5 m and 2.2 m. It also has a 1.52 m telescope, but is operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Spain and a robotic telescope operated by the Center for Astrobiology (CAB). The 3.5-m telescope is the largest telescope in the continental Europe: it has equatorial mount.
