Thread: The Obama Presidency

    Default The Obama Presidency

I figured a new thread would be needed at some point to continue discussion on Barack Obama's presidency.

Notice how he says roads and bridges, not public transportation, high speed rail, etc.

    Obama vows rebuilt infrastructure

    From BBC

Barack Obama outlines his recovery plans

US President-elect Barack Obama has promised to invest in infrastructure on a scale not seen since the 1950s, when the US highway system was established.

He used his weekly address to outline that the spending would be part of his plan to create at least 2.5m new jobs in the ailing US economy.

He also spoke of the need for expanded access to high-speed internet and the modernisation of school buildings.

Unemployment rose by more than 500,000 during November, figures have shown.

That was the biggest monthly rise in job cuts since 1974, and it drove up the jobless rate to a 15-year high of 6.7%, up from 6.5% in October.

The figures came less than a week after the National Bureau for Economic Research said the US economy had been in recession since late 2007.

Mr Obama, who takes office on 20 January, has previously said that his incoming team will be tasked with generating 2.5m new jobs by 2011.

On Saturday, speaking in his weekly address, Mr Obama outlined how most of that employment might be created.

We'll invest your precious tax dollars in new and smarter ways

"We will create millions of jobs by making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s," he said.

"We'll invest your precious tax dollars in new and smarter ways, and we'll set a simple rule - use it or lose it. If a state doesn't act quickly to invest in roads and bridges in their communities, they'll lose the money."

The president-elect said that broadband internet connections in the US should be available to schoolchildren and hospitals.

"In the country that invented the internet, every child should have the chance to get online and... that's how we'll strengthen America's competitiveness in the world," he said.
School buildings, he continued, would be modernised and upgraded to make them energy-efficient.

The new administration, he added, would launch a massive effort to make public buildings more energy-efficient by replacing old heating systems and installing efficient light bulbs.

"Our government now pays the highest energy bill in the world - we need to change that," he said.

He's still got a month and a half before he's President.

There's more being lowered on Obama's shoulders before he takes office than any other President in history.

Consider this an advance. He is talking about his upcoming presidency. The articles wont fit in the Election aftermath and race for the white house threads much longer.

As for how much he is being given responsibility for, well he asked for it. He wanted it.

But Obama is in the nearly singular situation where the current office-holder is not only a lame duck but also a dumb ass and chicken sh!t who seems to care little if he destroys the country by inaction, stupidity and a complete inability to engage as an adult -- or else he's a treasonous traitor who is selling us all out for his own interests.

Obama chose to be considered for the Office of the President and has rightfully won the support of the majority of the American people. I have no doubt he will do as good as he can with the mess he inherits. However, he did not choose to -- and cannot -- assume the role of National leader before the law allows him to do so. If he steps in too much he runs the risk of falling into various political traps.

In regards to the transition from one President to the next: From a historical perspective, what is happening now is not how things usually transpire.

A pararnoid person could consider that Barack is being set up.

Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion is reportedly being considered for (and accepting!) an appointment as Barack Obama’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

One thing Carrion didn’t do is purchase his own domain name, www.adolfocarrion.com. Andy Wolf, publisher of the Bronx Press and Riverdale Review, did.

Here’s what the site says of Carrion’s housing record:
The idea that Carrion could be tapped to fill a cabinet post probably even surprised the borough president, yet this is a serious rumor. But there has been no overwhelming housing boom in The Bronx, at least not one that Carrion could take any credit for. As for urban development, the major projects that have moved forward in The Bronx during the past seven years were all generated out of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office.
Along with a lengthy, unflattering screed on Carrion, Wolf also posted a bunch of Carrion cartoons.

It looks like Obama got himself away from Illinois politics in the nick of time. Let's hope the arrest of the Governor doesn't touch him ...

    Report: Blagojevich taken into custody

Scandal-tarred Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-Ill.) won't be making that Senate appointment after all. The governor has been arrested -- and is being accused of attempting to sell President-elect Obama's Senate seat in exchange for financial benefits for his family.

    From the Chicago Tribune:
Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, were arrested by FBI agents on federal corruption charges Tuesday morning.

Blagojevich and Harris were arrested simultaneously at their homes at about 6:15 a.m., according to Frank Bochte of the FBI. Both were awakened in their residences and transported to FBI headquarters in Chicago.

In one charge related to the appointment of a senator to replace Barack Obama, prosecutors allege that Blagojevich sought appointment for himself as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the new Obama administration, or a lucrative job with a union, in exchange for appointing a union-preferred candidate.

Another charge alleges Blagojevich and Harris conspired to demand the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members responsible for editorials critical of him in exchange for state help with the sale of Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium owned by Tribune Co.

Blagojevich and Harris, along with others, obtained and sought to gain financial benefits for the governor, members of his family and his campaign fund in exchange for appointments to state boards and commissions, state jobs and state contracts, according to the charges.

"The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering," U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said in a statement.

"They allege that Blagojevich put a 'for sale' sign on the naming of a United States senator; involved himself personally in pay-to-play schemes with the urgency of a salesman meeting his annual sales target; and corruptly used his office in an effort to trample editorial voices of criticism."

Blagojevich is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan later today, according to Randall Samborn of the U.S. attorney's office.

Just yesterday Blagojevich was all over the news, cheerleading for big unions in the auto industry.

Default The real reason why Governor arrested?

Blagojevich wrongly thinks the Fascist government takeover of banking and industry is complete and threatens BOA with to much meddling.

Default No money for rail in stimulus package?

I've heard nothing on rail, just the usual roads/bridges. Obama seems not to be interested in proper high speed rail links.
When is this country going to wake up and see that building rail would be a lasting legacy for this country's future?

Presently the Feds spend dollars on highways for every penny that goes to railroads. My take is that's likely to continue but with an uptick for railroads, which won't be left to starve. The national public is nowhere near as interested in trains as we are on this forum. Pretty sure things'll get better, though.

But what is the point in expanding highways now? Why not try a new idea, leave a new legacy that is more environmentally friendly and can create smart growth. A new interstate highway project for the 21st century. Roads are a known entity, they are the status quo. Although necessary to maintain, I see no need to expand highways when our cities are criss crossed with them. They bring spawl, envrionmental disruption and all that. Do we want to be even further behind much of the world, who are in the process of building HSR with abandon... Argentina is about to build their first line and China has 5-10 true HSR lines planned.

The opportunity exists to create a paradigm shift for transit and high speed rail in this country. There are plenty of projects to fund - i.e, california HSR, upgrading the NEC, Nevada Maglev, Midwest HSR project, etc..and countless urban transit projects in NYC and elswhere. It seems to me that in this age of environmental awareness, shunning rail now is highly irresponsible especially given this once in a lifetime opportunity. If the stimulus turns out to be justroad/bridge/energy package I would be dissapointed indeed in the new adminsitration; although if they manage to create a green-energy grid it would bode well for future rail projects. I hope Biden and the like make their presence felt and I hope they do not cow down to the highway lobby and demand rail's fair share.

Indeed, yesterday Blagojevich challenged anyone that so wanted to tap his phones and record his conversations -- stating he had nothing to hide. At the same time he asserted that the State of Illinois was suspending business with B of A for the credit actions it had taken against a Union employer (the "Republic Windows & Doors company in Chicago where workers are staging a sit-in" -- and not the auto unions as I incorrectly stated above).

Bottom Line: The timing is curious.

From the Prosecutors POV the governor was out of control with his Chicago Shakedown going into full effect -- and he needed to be stopped -- and sooner better than later.

Is a Pol who uses strong arm tactics to bring the possibly illegal acts of the Government under control actually a Friend of the People?

Or does that just reveal the Pol to be your Standard Thug (aka a Chicago Politician)?

I don't think that Obama is going to reveal all of his plans prior to Inauguration on January 20. Now he has no power to implement changes -- particularly a "radical" change such as one that puts Mass Transit ahead of Roads / Highways.
