What are some good photography websites? Particularly ones focused on the urban environment, architecture, etc.

RFCGraphics takes the most stunning large format photos of NYC (particularly panographics) that I've seen. Be sure to select "original" size when viewing:

This site is terrific database of buildings with histories and plenty of great photos and illustrations.

Instagram Pushes Real-Time Photos to Developers

Instagram A demonstration application build by Instagram showcases photos taken around the United States in real-time.

Instagram, the mobile photo-sharing service that currently exists only as a downloadable application for the Apple iPhone, is about to push its photos a little further into other corners of the Internet.

On Thursday, the company announced a new real-time A.P.I., or application programming interface, which it hopes will enable developers to build new types of applications or Web services using Instagram as a platform to distribute these images.

The new A.P.I. will let developers gain access to photos taken on Instagram once they are uploaded by Instagram’s users. Developers can then cull these images through a few different criteria, including monitoring photos taken by a specific person or photos that are marked with tags, similar to how hashtags are used on Twitter. Developers will also be able to filter images based on a photo’s location, or even specify images within a certain distance of a location on a map.

Kevin Systrom, a founder of Instagram, said that to showcase the new A.P.I., his team created an example application that highlights 20 locations from around the United States. The photos update whenever a new image is uploaded to Instagram tagged with one of the 20 locations in the demo app.

Instagram is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. The company reached two million users earlier this month, just four and a half months after its debut.

Earlier this month, Instagram announced that it had secured a $7 million round of financing led by the venture firm, Benchmark Capital. Mr. Systrom said at the time that he planned to use the money to increase his team of employees and build Instagram apps for other platforms.

Instagram is soon expected to produce a mobile application that will be available for the Google Android platform and a new Web site that will showcase Instagram photos.
