    Default In the East River

Can anyone identify the objects in the East River along the FDR Drive. They are all connected and run about 11blocks.

    From Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...05686&t=h&z=18

    Question In the east river

I think it is part of the construction of some sort of pontoon bridge. I recall reading somewhere that a long section of the FDR (and tunnel section under the buildings) needed to be reconstructed, this may be a temporary roadway to divert traffic while the roadwork is being completed.

That strange new roadway jutting out over the East River between 54th and 63rd Streets is set to open at 6 a.m. Sunday, making way for traffic diverted from the crumbling Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, where crews will begin renovations that are expected to take three years.

And if all goes well, the temporary roadway will preclude the hair-wrenching gridlock and sleepless nights of jackhammering that surely would have come had the city followed the conventional approach of simply closing down the lanes under construction, leaving drivers to fend for themselves.

The roadway is a feat of civil engineering and urban planning, officials say.

''Leave it to New York City to do something so complicated and challenging,'' said Tom Bowers, the chief engineer for the State Department of Transportation. ''But then again, what do you expect? This strip of real estate is hemmed in on one side by a city that never sleeps and on the other side by Mother Nature.''
