Default Housing - particularly social and affordable

This is the area I aim to work in, so I am interested in seeing interesting examples of affordable and social housing from around the world. I've seen perhaps thousands by now but all will be appreciated.

    Thanks!

(I may post some later as well)

    The best. Piano in Paris.

Less successful by Herzog and De Meuron also in Paris.

    Thumbs down

I find a lack of readability and order in the Renzo Piano example, though the materials are simpathetic and the building height context-appropriate.

As for the Herzog and De Meuron buildinG, I woulD go a lot farther than, "less successful". More like: eye-stabbingly ugly, crashingly inhuman building. WHY in Gawd's name would anyone create a building in a northern clime with such hermetic fenestration? It's loathsome. Really effing repulsive.

    Sorry about the rant.

The building below was also meant to be for charity housing (almshouses)

I think you miss the point with the Renzo example. Its not so much about how the building looks and fits into the city but about the experience of living there. That green space is an amazing space, its so private and wonderful to be in. The residents feel very secure and comfortable in the buildings.

Apparently the people in the Herzog building refer to it as 'the prison'

More pre-war municpal / public housing

    Rome - faux medieval

    Amsterdam - Brick impressionism (deKlerk)

I disagree. That is so if you LIVE in the building. Everyone else gets to experience it as part of the urban enviornment. That building is (a bit) of an SUV, maybe better for the owner than everyone else.

It looks very pretty. It also looks like it's planted in such a way as to impede anyone actually spending time in it, or is that just an impression from the pic?

    This is the space:

Remember this space is experienced from inside the residences also.

Your examples are very interesting, I like the Amsterdam pic.

The best in NY. It won't be built though, its already been cutback a million times and the units are double the funding the developers can get while maintaining the required Fair Market Rents based on Area Median Income for affordable housing.

The buildings roof was supposed to act as a terraced park leading all the way to the top.

Stern: a couple of months ago the people at Dattner seemed reasonably sure it was going ahead...

I wish I had better pics of the area. More than the architecture (which I', so-so about) the urban layout is really successful.

Copenhagen gets my vote; but, Amsterdam IMHO does comes in a close second.

    Cheers

I've met with people at Phipps (the developer). The price of the already cut back design is double what they can get financing for and since the value of Low Income Housing Tax Credits continues to fall (the leading financing instrument for affordable housing) their outlook is grim.
