No construction yet, the demolition should begin soon.

Back in the 60's, a developer wanted to pull down a classic apartment building on the NW corner of 6th Avenue and West 55th Street, to erect a new steel and glass hi-rise. In the final court decision, the judge disallowed it, saying the developer had an "edifice complex." (The building still stands). I think from the low-level look up at this new building, the sketch suggests another "edifice complex," especially as 250 West 55th Street has few floors planned, but will actually be taller due to higher ceilings on each floor.

Demolition is now underway, with Breeze handling it, the same company that did 250 West 55th Street. There is a permit posted, but none for asbestos.

The architect's brochure describes the hotel as due to finish in 2011, which was undoubtedly written before the crash. A more realistic date would now be 2013 or 2014.

Some minor progress has been made getting the buildings down.

The "progress" is more than the naked eye can see. When the Broadway gate is open you can see they have hollowed out the main building, and they can be heard inside the 54th Street buildings doing the same there.

Before too long we should see the heavy equipment moving in to remove ceilings and walls.

Whatever gets built, it will be better than what is there now.

Demolition has resumed, with a large dumpster outside, and the northern-most building mostly gone. It shouldn't be too long before there is an empty lot, and construction is underway.

    This is great news.

Sadly, SOM has added BP's POS on W55th to its website so perhaps the schmuck Zuckerman plans to move forward soon with this cheap box.

As a rule in this city, ugly decrepit buildings come down slowly, meanwhile beautiful ones are taken down instantaneously.

They seem to be in no hurry dismantling this bunch...

I will be elated when those pieces of crap are gone. It's a shame that the nice one with the cornice -- just west of the piles of junk -- is coming down too.

Hopefully, this rancid piece of feces next to the Ed Sullivan Theatre will come down in a few years too. It's loathsome to anyone who lives or works in the area and is an utter embarrassment to NY since it's on national television practically every night when Letterman shows shots of the people outside of the theatre.

Why the hell doesn't Letterman have somebody clean that thing?

I can't believe I can actually say I can't wait to see a Nobutaka Ashihara designed building go up and this is that one.

More angular than what was shown at the top of this page. Dwarfs the ~ 30-story apartment building just to the north.

Is that a restaurant in the circular structure up top?
