Default Classic New York in Color Photos

A number of threads have images of Classic New York architecture (being loosely defined here as the built environment in all of its art-deco, beaux-arts & neo-classic grandeur prior to advent of modernism, post-modernism and internationalism).

However, most of those threads feature black & white pics that make the Classic New York look very remote to our modern eyes - like something out of ancient history.

So this is a thread dedicated those rare color photographs of the 1930s, 40s & 50s (present day pics that show no hint of the modern could also count).

Here are a few to start:

This was the first color aerial photograph ever taken (1930):

That last pic has me thinking. Does anyone know of info about the changing buildings on Liberty Island? There is a lot less now than there was in the past. What were they for? When were they demolished?

^ Look how quiet and empty the streets are...at what appears to be a mid-day shot. This picture reveals just how much less crowded NYC was then. It seems like paradise.

Katherine Hepburn said in one of her books that you could drive around Manhattan in the 1930's and find street parking anywhere, without a problem. I remember watching a tv show when I was a kid and they were showing how you could walk around the Wall street district on Sundays and the area was completely devoid of people.

Wall Street area was like that up through the late 90s.

One of my favorite things about living in NYC was experiencing the deserted streets. Especially during the summer... August... it would get very deserted.

Not any more. The empty holiday weekends are a thing of the past. Although in August things do slow down somewhat, but that really just means slower moving visitors.
