I love this. We can develop our own love/hate relationship with a city. It disappoints us, frustrates us, and then suddenly charms us and sweeps us off our feet all over again.

I remember after getting a bit burned out on the city it was one of the incredibly thick snows, you know, the ones that just cover the city and stop every car in its tracks. That stillness, the streets filled with white, people heading out into the silence, one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. NYC is like that. It can burn and tax you, but then it gives you something that is unforgettable. At least for me.

Your welcome. As for regretting moving (actually I was born here) to NEW YORK.

I am still enjoying NYC after a few decades of living here: but, my 'border collie' read your post and he already has his toy box packed and ready to move out of town. (LOL)

I have a good friend who just moved to Deposit NY, my wife & I plan to move up by him in a few years from now: but that all pie-in-the-sky right now. Bye for now.

Oh boy, there are not many dogs more amped than Australian Cattle Dogs, but you have one. Congratulations. My dogs, as I've said, got me out. I think they were my secret "animal" side (without getting hokey about it). That is to say, I moved out for them, but was secretly moving out for myself I think. Whatever.

As for Deposit NY and the big plans. Not pie-in-the-sky, you can do it. I knew a friend who moved out there, roughly. There can a bit of a dull factor that one has to deal with, but very beautiful. Wish you the best of luck.

infoshare, your adorable dog reminded me of this National Geographic article from a while ago. Apparently border collies are one of the smartest breeds.

Thanks, and that Nat Geo photo looks a lot like 'buddy' - similar black/white markings. A very smart breed indeed: and they do just fine living in the city if they get enough attention & exercise.

    cheers

A photo of buddys' father is on this website; His dad is on the cover splash page of the EYE SPY website , and to see another photo of him look for the dog named 'CELT' in one of the many action photo captions.

Cover page caption "A young CELT walking in the woods, with friends - he is now 15 years old" see CELTs photo here - http://www.eyespybordercollies.com/

But that said, there are still lots of trees in Central Park. And most people stay in/come to city because of the decided lack of PO TOWN FOLKS like these. Hey, what she needs is a big badge for her business like dem HERBA*SS badges you see in the suburbs.

Hey, that is a handsome dog. Here is Tiger and Zoa. Zoa hogging the camera a bit. Tiger just passed this summer at 16, but he was the guy who really got me out of the city. When I first moved up here I had yet another Cattle Dog (two at the time) who had been raised in the city, and she was very friendly, enjoying the dog parks, etc. But when I got Tiger, he was just a handful. He really wanted to open up, and it was when he ran in the woods it took my breath away. Chula passed 5 years back. We got Zoa a year and a half ago, she's the lone wolf now, if you don't count the cat Rama who is a bit wolfy for a cat.

I haven't had much experience with Border Collies, but everything I've heard about them are things that have made me love the Australian Cattle Dog, though perhaps even more. My one memorable experience with a Border Collie was actually when I had run into Matthew Broderick with his dog. It was one of those NYC experiences you just always recall. I stopped him because of his dog and asked him about it and he was friendly enough. I believe it was a Border Collie (maybe mix), though now years later he apparently has another breed. For about 10 minutes we talked on the step of the restaurant Raoul's on Prince. He told me about how he got the dog when he was on a film shoot in some outlying place, a guy selling pups from the back of a pick up. He told me how he just fell in love with her. And then I remember him wanting to so me how crazy his dog was when we discussed their intensity. He said "Ball" and the dog just flipped a switch, and went into crazed search mode. He admitted it was an unfair to do, and he calmed her down right way. In any case, I got a glimpse of one of those Border Collie traits, and a wonderful NY memory as well. It sits deep within me.

As far as exercise and attention, its both of them that are needed for the smart breeds. Its like having a perpetually inquisitive 3 year old with you. You can't just throw a stick. They have to be a "part" of something, some activity, some job. I'm sure you find it the same.

p.s. I love the pictures of buddy's father in the woods. They remind me that I honestly have heard from someone who knew that there are places within an hour or so where you can take your dog to herd sheep (!?). I've Googled and Googled for it, but have never been able to find it. It is something that I have always wanted to do for my dogs, at least once, something their instincts are made for.

Great story. I lived on Prince Street, and have also seen him walking his dog in the area; he would always look our way - I guess because 'Buddy' is a Border Collie. My wife once said to me, "that was Mathew Broderick who just waved to us": but at the time I did not recognize him, or even know that he was a celebrity.

As far as buddy being a breed that needs be 'part' of something, that is true: there are three other pets in the house and my wife and I do not have kids - so he is quite the happy dog.

    Cheers

Hey, that is pretty cool. He was a nice fellow and clearly loved his dog (I lived on Downing). I tried to find a picture of his dog on Google so I could recall more precisely, but all the photos are of a different breed. Nice though that we both got to share over the same dog. NYC, such a small place where so many good things happen. We don't have kids either, our Cattle Dog and the cat are quite enough right now. Good to meet your acquaintance.

The cat/pup segment at 00:20 is priceless – we both (Martina & I) got a real chuckle from that particular scene; being that we have witnessed similar 'cautious encounters' between our mature cats and the newly arrived collie pup.

Great vidio, and glad to have made your ‘cyber’ acquaintance.
