must be nice to own prime Manhattan land!

they should definitely go big on that plot but I don't see why they couldn't have integrated a nice new gymnasium into the new place

    They are.

A pool, gym, varsity practice rooms, an indoor track, and locker rooms will occupy the basement levels, and there will be a few more gym spaces on the fifth and sixth floors.

sorry that was my oversight. So why are people complaining then?

There are people genuinely concerned about NYU's expansion across Greenwich Village, but sometimes the NIMBYs are a little overkill when it comes down to it.

There were a lot of arguments about this when the rezoning battle was going on (read this thread from the beginning if you want the recap.) There are just a lot of people in the Village who have an irrational hatred of NYU.

In point of fact, this is not an "expansion" if we define that as increasing their footprint outward (although I'm sure they're doing that also.) The two superblocks (or one big one, depending on how you're looking at it) in question are already their's. They're just dialing up the density on them.

It's been a long time. Don't know if there's anyone here who still cares. But this was much the war when they pushed through the zoning change.

    Anyway, it's very much happening:

I pass by quite regularly and it really changes the feel of that side of Houston Street. It has gone from more open feeling to extending the street canyon.

The old building was very ugly/plain. It's still a skeleton, but it at least holds the possibility of being better looking. It will certainly be more modern. And being as wide as it is, Houston can handle a taller building without it feeling looming.
