The shuttle Enterprise is set to fly to JFK two weeks from today. Any ideas on where to position myself, to photograph its approach and landing?

The historic prototype is set to arrive at JFK Airport April 23 aboard a 747. It will be moved by barge to its new permanent home at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in June, officials said.“Once it lands, the Enterprise will immediately become an iconic and must-see destination in New York that will further contribute to our reputation as the greatest city in the world,” Sen. Chuck Schumer crowed.

THe route for Discovery's arrival will not be published for security reasons, as I expect it will be for Enterprise. That being said, dont be surprised if there are several informed guesses. For DC, NASA flew a couple T-38's to try out routes for arrival, might happen in NYC as well.

The SCA Boeing 747-100 NASA 905 has arrived in Florida to pick up Discovery:

The Boeing Phantom Ray is a stealth unmanned combat air vehicle being developed by Boeing using company funds. The Phantom Ray is a demonstrator aircraft, about the size of a fighter that will conduct a program of test flights involving surveillance, ground attack and autonomous aerial refueling missions

Nope, just one of the super knowledgeable guys from nasaspaceflight. I live in Virginia beach, so it was not too far to drive up to DC for the week to watch Discovery arrive and Enterprise leave. That image is from NASA, all my pictures are behind a pay section of our site ( with over 100 terabytes of data, you kind of have to charge people unfortunately but we don't make any kind of profit)

Ugh, Monday's flight of Shuttle Enterprise has been postponed due to weather. And that was my only free day next week... Alas.

    Here is the media advisory:

NASA's planned flight to New York City of space shuttle Enterprise atop the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) has been postponed until further notice due to an unfavorable weather forecast for Monday, April 23.

To ensure a safe flight for Enterprise and the SCA, NASA managers, in consultation with the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, decided Friday to delay the flight because of inclement weather predicted in both New York and Washington, where the flight will originate.

Managers will continue to review weather forecasts and announce a new flight date as soon as practical.

We will advise of that date as soon as we are made aware.

    And a bit more:

After departing Washington, the SCA and Enterprise will fly over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area before landing and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Several weeks following the arrival, Enterprise will be "demated" from the 747 and placed on a barge that will be moved by tugboat up the Hudson River to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in June. The shuttle will be lifted by crane and placed on the flight deck of the Intrepid where it will be on exhibit to the public starting this summer in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion. The Intrepid continues work on a permanent exhibit facility to showcase Enterprise that will enhance the museum's space-related exhibits and education curriculum.
