Absolutely. The back end of the space shuttles has always been my favorite part.

Wait, that's just a temporary cover right? I mean, it has to be. They're not leaving that abomination on the end of it. A nation of geeky kids will be screaming "where's the rocket bits Daddy!".

The tailcone will stay on Enterprise indefinitely, as that is how Intrepid decided to display Enterprise. The final configuration in the new museum wants to show her as if she were flaring to land on the first ALT.

While Enterprise is a real orbiter, the SSME mockups are not and only intended to be notional representations for aerodynamic testing and processing tests.

I understand the reasoning but...Real or not, i'd rather see them than that tail cone!

Well, it's an artifact, and I guess the thinking is that it should be displayed the way it functioned.

Since the engine isn't real, I sort of agree with that.

I understand, I guess. But 99.9% of visitors will neither know nor care that the tail cone is the most accurate way Enterprise should be shown. Stick some plywood engines on that bad boy, spray em black and boom, you got a proper shuttle. D U N. Done.

All the more reason to be accurate. Museums are supposed to teach.

But also inspire. Even plywood engine mockups would be better than the tailcone.
