NEW YORK (AP) — A man who accused Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash of having sex with him when he was a teenage boy has recanted his story.
In a surprising turnabout on Tuesday, the man described his sexual relationship with Clash as adult and consensual.

Clash responded with a statement of his own, saying he is “relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest.”

The man, who has not identified himself, released his statement through the Harrisburg, Pa., law firm Andreozzi & Associates.
Sesame Workshop, which produces “Sesame Street,” soon followed up by saying, “We are happy that Kevin can move on from this unfortunate episode.”

The episode began Monday morning, when Sesame Workshop startled the world by announcing that Clash had taken a leave of absence from “Sesame Street” in the wake of allegations that he had had a relationship with a 16-year-old.

Clash swiftly denied the charges of his accuser, who is now in his early 20s. Clash acknowledged that he is gay but said the relationship was between two consenting adults.
Neither Clash nor Sesame Workshop indicated when he might return to work on the show, on which he has performed as Elmo since 1984.

I just heard that on the news today and was so angry. Even though he's in the clear, people will still wonder to themselves, and he knows that. That's why the punishment for false accusations should be severe, and this accuser should pay a heavy price for that.

    Yeah, you're RIGHT!!!

Not only was he falsely accused of a sex crime with a then 16-y-o, but he was also outed and blackballed to the point where it now affects the loyal integrity of his employment, having worked there for so many years doing what he loves to do; Entertaining small children!!!

Well, his lifestyle is what he chose.

But nevertheless, the guy whom he had an affair with had absolutely no business outing him. Worst yet, the guy lied about his what his age was during the relationship!!

Makes you wonder as to whether the cowardly wimp was out for money,or to try to get even with him. In any case, he should be punished for that! Child molestation and sex abuse is a very serious accusation, and carries very heavy charges behind it.

What if the Clash was prosecuted, tried and convicted of such a crime? An innocent man could have gone to the pokey for nothing!

Clash paid the accuser $125,000 to recant the story. If the accusations were false, I really don't understand why he would have paid that.

Plus now the kid is saying he was 'forced' into recanting by his own lawyer. Sorry, this kid sounds like a total idiot.

Elmo Actor Kevin Clash Resigns From ‘Sesame Street’ Amid New Sex Allegations

Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash has resigned from “Sesame Street” in the wake of new allegations of having sex with a minor.
The announcement came Tuesday as a second accuser came forward alleging that he had sexual encounters with Clash in 1993 when he was 15 years old and Clash was 32. Cecil Singleton, now an adult, is filing a federal lawsuit in New York charging Clash with sexual abuse.

It’s the second underage sex allegations made against the man best known as the famous voice of Elmo in two weeks.
The shocking sex scandal first erupted on Nov. 12 when Clash, 45, denied accusations made by another accuser, Sheldon Stephens, now 23, who claimed to have had a sexual relationship with Clash when he was 16 — but recanted his story 48 hours later. Clash called the claims “false and defamatory” and admitted he had a sexual relationship with Stephens, but he says it was a consensual relationship that began after Stephens became an adult.

Stephens reportedly signed a $125,000 settlement agreement, but he has since stated that he regrets recanting his story as part of the deal, according to TMZ.

Clash has been on “Sesame Street” for 28 years and created the voice of “Elmo,” one of the classic children’s programs most popular characters of all time.
“It’s a sad day for Sesame Street,” says a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop, who confirmed the turn of events Tuesday in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.”
