I tried to show how diverse the place is with some streetlife, monuments, boats, parks etc...
www.HabitatMap.org, a Brooklyn-based non-profit dedicated to building sustainable cities through citizen action has recently released an online community mapping and social networking platform that some of you may be interested in.
To get an idea of how it works, check out the thematic maps we put together in collaboration with the Newtown Creek Alliance.
HabitatMap is a wiki so any registered participant can establish a marker, edit an existing marker, or make a map.

Edit: I've now had a chance to explore this more thoroughly and I'd just like to say where would we be without Camilo Jose Vergara and his photos, which provide such a fascinating and indelible then and now urban journey. I'm amazed and heartened by his generosity in freely sharing some of his work on the internet with all who are interested. Let's not forget The Bronx, mentioned elsewhere in this thread.
