Boat Parade On the Harbor July 4

On 4 July 2003, the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, in concert with a number of other organizations will host a Grand Parade of Flags. This year's parade will celebrate downtown Manhattan, with landside festivities and entertainment at numerous locations along New York Harbor and the East and Hudson Rivers.

The goal of the parade is, of course, to celebrate the 4th of July. But it is also to celebrate the working watercraft of this great harbor, especially mariners who, all too often, end up working on holidays such as this. It is to introduce New Yorkers to their beautiful, active and productive waterfront and waterways and recovering estuary. And it is to honor the efforts of all those who work hard on and in the water: keeping it safe, clean and workable, transporting people and goods, keeping the infrastructure together, educating and training people, providing recreation, saving lives and countless other activities that most people simply aren't aware of.

On the water, we are planning a maritime parade of flags around lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Navy Yard on the East River past the South Street Seaportaround The Battery and north along Battery Park City to Hudson River Park; scroll to the end of this article for a map of the route.

This celebration, first proposed by Michael Fortenbaugh of the Manhattan Sailing Club and being brought to life by John Doswell of the Working Watercraft committee, will build upon the success and the energy of the 2002 Governors Island Flotilla and celebrate our working harbor, with participation by tugboats and workboats, barges, salvage boats, ferryboats and water taxis, dinner cruise, sightseeing and river excursion boats, charter boats of all types, sail or power, official vessels including FDNY, USCG, police, military, buoy tenders, Army Corps, DEC, NOAA vessels, fishing boats, both commercial and charter, historic working vessels of all types, SeaTow, USCG Auxiliary, other safety vessels, educational and ocean/river research vessels, sail and maritime training vessels, pilot boats, crew boats, dive boats, selected cargo vessels and cruise ships, including coastal cruisers, entertainment boats and barges, sailing schools and other/unusual vessels.

I would like to go over there too for those same reasons, but I have a feeling my girlfriend will somehow throw a wrench in that plan, we'll see.
