HOME DEPOT EYEING TWO SPOTS IN CITY
    By LOIS WEISS

March 14, 2003 -- Home Depot is in talks to bring its first two locations to Manhattan.

The home-improvement monolith has its eyes on 28-40 W. 23rd St. off Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District, and the Third Avenue and 58th Street entrance to the 80,000-square-foot lower level of the Bloomberg tower, which is now under construction by Vornado Realty Trust.

"They are sincere and planning to do both," said one real estate source.

The Vornado deal would come in around $100 a foot while the 23rd Street location would cost about half of that.

The historically renovated 23rd Street building would have the category killer in 141,000 rentable feet formerly occupied by Hasbro on the lower level, first floor and mezzanine.

The building is owned and operated by principals of GVA Williams.

"There is an agreement and there are some open items, but there is an interest in closing the transaction," said one source.

John Simley, a spokesperson for Home Depot declined comment.

He noted, however, the stores will be smaller than average stores. The urban stores have no storage space for large items, which are shipped from another location.

Steve Roth, chairman of Vornado, declined to comment on the Home Depot possibility but added he is "always interested to hear about market rumors."

Jerome Cohen, chairman of GVA Williams, declined comment.

Now, if you could just get a Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Sonic, Hardee's, you could really class up the joint! *

Yeah, maybe throw in some Starbucks, McDonald's, and Wendy's, too.

    Hey better than H&M....

Anyone else find their clothing just far too small. Seriously who do they make the clothing for? Off topic, I know.

I feel a small hardware store would better fit that area...but whatever.

Amigo32 - If you say one bad word about Sonic, I just might have to get a petition going to re-dirty the facade of the old Met Life building!

Sonic is one of the best reasons to leave New Jersey when travelling. What I wouldn't do for a #2 burger with tater tots and an oreo blast...

Oh yeah - keep Home Depot out of Manhattan!
