Not a bad building, but I remember the ad's for it when it was first announced. It was supposed to be up there with ESB and Chrysler for visibility from Queens/N.J. and in terms of elegance and noteriety. It's a "pencil" to me, I think Michael Graves took over after Robert A.M. Stern pulled out. Seems to be 600 feet or so to me. 6/10 from what I can see so far...

Oh yeah, great pics Ed! Gotta love the shot with the old American Radiator building. I think ya can see the Atlas from Bryant Park too.

It's about 605 feet, 55 stories. *I'd wish it were a lot higher, but then again it's too slender and wouldn't make for a pleasing aesthetic effect if it were.

The shaft is very astylar; the white mullions are kinda reminiscent of the Daily News building. *And why is there no crown? *The renderings show it with a crown.

With the crown it would've been 695 feet. Last minute design change.

An incredible disappointment that didn't live up to the hype. *I think it fails. *Two thumbs down.

Great photos Edward. *(They turned up 2-6 in a Google search.) *I think the beige limestone IS a little disappointing-- polished black and white granite might have been more impressive-- and the entrances are kind of bland, like some earnest co-op. *But the setbacks and flutes are awesome. *It fits Fifth Avenue a helluva lot better than those SOM legos behind it.

I agree. Also, it's narrow shaft looks nice from far away. It's when you get close that the blue, white, and yellow stripes start to look a little cheesy, almost unfinished. Maybe it is? Anyway, it doesn't match the renderings - surprise, surprise.

Few buildings ever look better than their renderings, Knight. *They could gloss over 55 Water Street and make it look presentable in a rendering.

One of the most upsetting buildings is the CIBC building. It's rendering looked great.
