A great place for a fun animated sign and interesting retail store/attraction.

I like that there is a corporate entrance on 41st Street/Eighth Avenue that is separate from 42nd Street.

This building is one of the most satisfying projects on all of 42nd Street. For most of my life it was a parking lot. Hopefully we see the other two corners of this intersection better developed. The eastern edge of this block has a very grand entrance. This ends deserves as much.

If I remembered right, there used to be a newspaper stand right there on Eighth on near the 42 St corner. I would like to see them bring it back to that same spot.

Okay, so I went yesterday to check on the progress of this place and noticed that they've put the newspaper stand that I was talking about ^ across 41 St. instead:

There's also a newsstand on 42nd just east of Eighth, on the midtown side of the AMC 25 Theater, out front of Modell's (good place to stock up on candy before the movie ).

If they put a stand closer to the corner of 42nd / Eighth it would just get in the way.

^ True. There isn't much room at that corner especially with the crush of pedestrians.

Anyway, the thumbnail didn't come out right so here's another try:

We really need 3 or 4 buildings in Midtown to rise above the rest.

And not by using some form of a giant needle.

^ My impression is that those needles have not much to do with function, and a whole lot to do with vanity.

Whatever the reason, the skyline is much better for having them as they puncture the plateau.

Photoshop them out and there's an uneven tabletop across the island.

But you have to admit that a functioning building built up to the height of those needles would do a lot more for breaking that plateau.

The zoning is the problem. It just encourages bulky towers. Unless the Penn Towers are built, the skyline will look like this for decades. There doesn't seem to be any way developers are going to build really tall in this city. Even the ESB looks small on the skyline. You need something 400m+ to really stand out from the mass. That is why it is sad that they only plan on building a 1000ft tower at hudson yards.

Well developers could build tall slender towers on many sites in the city if they really wanted to.

Here are 3 of my faves from Dubai.

    Al Sharq Tower (canceled)

    Infinity Tower (never built)
