    As graceless and ill-proportioned the finalist may have been, it is head and shoulders a better design than the 3 planned west side behemoths such as Vornado's replacement for the Hotel Pennsylvania and Brookfield's 2 Manhattan West towers.

    ^No. Just...no. The mere suggestion screams of a lack of perspective.

    Empire State Building turns 80: The skyscraper that defines New York

    Perhaps no building has symbolized a city and it's skyline as much as the Empire State Building. For 80 years the iconic skyscraper has been the centerpiece to the world's most famous and stunning skyline.

    Let's bid a happy 80th birthday to the Empire State Building with a look back at the skyscraper through the years ...

    It's hard to believe it is 80 years old.

    My contribution to this thread. In October 2009 we took a vacation to your awsome city for a week. I would like to thank fellow forum member BrooklynRider for taking the chance and meeting 3 random strangers and giving them a private tour of the building. He is truly a great person and without him i would not have been able to get some really great pics.

    We were allowed to go to the 102nd floor, and in the process we met Tony, the elevator operator, and the guy that does the lighting for the top floors, sorry i forgot his name. But here are some pics of our experience.

    I waited for years to take this pic, Loved the view they used in Scent of a Woman and Once Upon a Time in America. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and the sun was just going down, and i managed to get the ESB between the legs of the Manhattan Bridge.

    The ESB is a fine building, but not my favorite. I prefer the Chrysler any day, but most people do.

    All the best ESB.
    When elevator operator Tony retires they should replace him with a nice young lady. Time to move to the future.

    The number of people who confuse the two (ESB and Chrysler) is a crime against architecture.

    The zeppelin Hindenburg floats past the Empire State Building over Manhattan on Aug. 8, 1936. The German airship was en route to Lakehurst, New Jersey, from Germany. The Hindenburg would later explode in a spectacular fireball above Lakehurst on May 6, 1937.

    ^ Lovely picture, that.
    It's funny, but scenes like the above always strike me as more of the modern ideal than that of today.

    Other tall office buildings taller than the ESB still have yet to to be the WTB as long as the ESB was - 40-plus years!

    DB, so far, is the #1 contender, but it's only about 2 years old. here are some more pics;
