Watch the Empire State Building Give Its First-Ever Light Show

    By Peter Ha

Were you in NYC last night? Notice anything different about its iconic skyline around 9PM?

For the second time this month but with a little more pizazz, the Empire State Building flexed its fancy new Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting system muscles for its first-ever light show. A myriad of colors sprinkled the sky perfectly in sync with Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" and "Empire State of Mind".

The new system can display more than 16 million colors in a variety of ways as evidenced by last night's show. Earlier this month during the presidential election, CNN commandeered the ESB to display election results.

It's pretty neat that the ESB has entered into a new era but it kinda makes me think it belongs in Vegas now.

I like. Finally, always wondered why NYC didn't have stuff like this.

Pretty dramatic. Only a couple of spots had seizure potential, but they probably just wanted to run the whole thing for opening night. Lucky souls on the observation deck. Gave pilots a nice surprise.

Frightening how many loons have ruined their lives (and those of their family) because of this meaningless date date...I hope there are no Jim Jones parties.

Deadline for Empire State Building IPO looms

Malkin Holdings, which operates the famous tower, said in a filing Wednesday that shareholders have the next 10 business days to agree to including the Empire State Building in an initial public offering or risk losing their shares' value.

The Empire State Building, a popular tourist destination, is slated to go public as part of a real estate investment trust.

    Published: June 12, 2013 - 1:47 pm

Shareholders in the Empire State Building have until June to agree to a plan to include the 102-story landmark tower in a projected $5.2 billion, 19-building real estate investment trust or risk losing the value of their shares. Malkin Holdings, which operates the famous Art Deco tower, announced the deadline for unanimous approval among shareholders in a financial filing on Wednesday. The resulting public real estate company will be called Empire State Realty Holdings.

There are about 2,800 owners of the Empire State Building's 3,300 equity shares, which are valued at about $320,000 apiece. A provision allows Malkin Holdings to buy out owners at a paltry $100 per share if owners of 80% of the shares agree to the plan to bring the building public. On Wednesday, Malkin Holdings disclosed that owners of 89% of the shares had voted in favor of the public offering, meaning as many as 330 shareholders could end up receiving a fraction of the value of their shares if they do not end their opposition.

Last month, Malkin Holdings reached the necessary 80% approval after it pushed past at least two lawsuits contesting the legitimacy of the $100 a share buyout plan. Those suits argued that Malkin forced dissenters to reverse their vote. Malkin Holdings also revealed in the filing that it has received the necessary majority votes to include two other buildings it controls in the IPO—60 E. 42nd St., a 55-story, 1.3 million-square-foot tower it owns across from Grand Central Terminal; and 250 W. 57th St., a 540,000-square-foot office building. The other 16 buildings in the IPO plan have already been approved.
The company, which is controlled by the father and son team of Peter and Anthony Malkin, is planning to wrap the collection of midtown buildings together in a real estate investment trust by the end of the year in what would be one of the largest public offerings of its type.

The Malkins have argued that a REIT would unify the sprawling ownership of its buildings under a more efficient structure and give the structures better access to capital.

Luckily she won't be doing that schizo trippy light dance very often. She was trying way too hard last night.

Trying to compete with the fireworks, but failed. It was still fun to look at. Lucky people in towers that could see ESB and the fireworks at the same time.
