One thing I notice as you approach the WTC via the PATH train, is the the site is much furter along with construction than most people probably realize.

A few more pics from the site...

The June 2007 issue of Esquire has the 4th installment of "The Rebuilding" series, this one named "The Steel". Not much new or interesting except this:

"The Port Authority, a billion over budget and panting hard to find a private-sector partner with deep pockets, has quietly renamed the thing. Hello, One World Trade Center. Farewell, Freedom Tower."

yes! Freedom Tower is such a hokey name. Made sense for about a day. One World Trade Center is so much more fitting, commanding.

I searched for a source of confirmation, but couldn't find any. It was stated that the change was done quietly, but I think the matter would have been addressed at the April 25th PA meeting.

The owner/landlord of the building is 1 World Trade Center LLC, a "wholly owned subsidiary of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey."

    Typical record from the minutes:
RESOLVED, that 1 World Trade Center LLC (1 WTC LLC) be and it hereby is authorized to enter into a construction trade contract for construction of the curtain wall for the Freedom Tower,
    Meeting minutes

We can revisit this if and when more info becomes available.

The "quietly" is a reference to the fact that people don't bother to read. This building has always been WTC tower 1. It's name is Freedom Tower. Revisiting this issue is like starting the "should we rebuild the Twins" argument. A useless waste of time.

More on the Freedom Tower here...

But the article stated: quietly changed.

You could also read that to mean they didn't want it to get out. My statement about the PA minutes was merely my opinion. They may want to keep this quiet for political reasons.

If I may assume the majority sentiment here - what's important is the name they put over the door. It's entirely plausible that major tenants might be balking at the name.
