Does anyone know if the police are still giving the concrete trucks a hard time, stopping them from getting over to Ground Zero so that the concrete can be poured for the cores?![]()

They do weld the jumbo columns during the day. This was around 6ish:
[er, nevermind]
And a couple hours later, me and ironworkers in the lobby of 1WTC...
[neverming again]
BTW, if you've been wondering what those white things wrapped around the jumbo columns are on the webcams (and in these two pics), the ironworker to my left was telling me how they have to control the temperature of the columns while they're being welded (I THINK to prevent thermal expansion, though I'm not 100% on that), and the white coverings are to control the temperature... kind of like a winter coat.

I was going to reply to you question the other day and got distracted .
With all the welding they have to do I wouldn't be suprised if they had 3 shifts.
For reasions I can't get into, the steel has to cool slowly after welding. There are also pics out there of welders pre-heating the steel before welding.
That photo really shows just how massive the structure is.
If it were mild steel (ASTM A-36) I would say yes, but it goes way beyond that.
PS: I am legally bound NOT to disclose some stuff about the tower, and this subject gets into some critical stuff.
i just walked past the wtc on my way home and the crane is up all the way for real hard to see on the live cam though
The construction site looks looks really impressive now, especially with the all the huge cranes. This evening was the first time in a long time I've been blown away by the scale of the project.
Looks like one of the cranes will be jumped today. I'm presuming the north one.
Never noticed how huge the sections were.

So is THAT what they meant when it was revealed that four cranes would be needed to help build the tower? Those 2 huge red ones?
Or are there still two more Kangaroo (tower) Cranes coming later on down the road?
Yeah Derek, that's my guess as well because it hasn't risen more yet in a while, and the South one seems to be up as far as it will go until more steel is erected for the South Core.![]()

I'd be very surprised if there are no more tower cranes. Even BOA had three.
The construction site look really impressive now, especially on that last picture!
I wonder about those black crane sections - if these cranes are the Internal Climbing Tower Cranes as Zen described, they don't need too much of an extension, they just climb together with the every new second floor of the tower, as I understood..
The 18000 is now completely gone from the low-res webcam field of view - too tall, up there in the sky.... hopefully we'll see new perimeter steel soon.
*From the low-res cam looks like they keep laying down steel for the 3rd floor on the East side of the building. Can see at least 3 cranes in action simultaneously!
