I seriously wonder why they didn't just decide to clad the tapered corners without the glass? Is there an actual need to box off the corners?

Good point. It looked like they were just using some kind of stainless steel or aluminum panels for the corners.

They were getting a lot of international criticism that without glass in the base it gave the impression that the entire country is paranoid and it was too much like a fortress.

Just the chamfered corners, though? I'm not talking about covering all 8 faces in panels.

The rest of the world is correct, obviously. The NYPD and their ridiculous regulations doomed the base.

On a related note, it makes no sense to have built the base with odd angles and now to disguise all that complex engineering and fabrication with straight lines.
