Was that the cause - improper rigging?

I haven't seen a report on the accident; the story on day one was that a cable snapped. If it was rigging, it seems unusual that the crane was removed.

^^ The winch could have failed, the tie-off on the hook could have snapped, chokers snapped, there are so many possibilities of what could have happened. Seeing all of the cable on the ground it was probably either the winch or the tie-off. All that cable on the load was defiantly not the rigging.

The cable didn't snap, the drum unspooled. You can see from the relative lack of damage that this load was not in freefall when it hit, in fact, I saw the trailer after the scene was cleared and it actually didn't look that bad. The load still had the braking effect of the cable coming off the drum. Once it hit, the rest of the cable continue to unspool onto of it. If the load of 40,000lbs is correct then that cable is probably rated for up to 200,000lbs.

If 40,000lbs hits the ground in complete freefall from over 400ft it would be well on its way to terminal velocity (for that sort of object, 200+mph). That trailer would have been swept into garbage bags.

The drum unspooled? Any scuttlebutt on whether it was an error when they assembled it or some kind of structural defect? Still, it is amazing that there was so little damage and no one was injured.

WTC 1 lit up in red tonight for Cardinal Tim Dolan looks great.

It's a friction crane. The operator has 2 controls, the control for the drum with the line in it and the brake which is a foot lever most of the time. Unlike the new cranes which those 2 functions are in one control. The break must of malfunctioned.

Interesting in that I think this is the first non-Christmas effort to light the building to acknowledge an event. This would point then to future use of lighting schemes to commemorate holidays, special events etc. I like it that 1 WTC wants to be as bold a presence as possible on the skyline. I forget, but will the spire also have the capacity for alternate illumination schemes? Coupled with the ESB's and BOA's lighting, this should be interesting to watch how they either coordinate or clash.

I prefer each doing their own thing. Coordinate is boring.

Clash is the wrong word. Different lighting schemes will never really clash, just adds to the overall diversity or variety of the skyline.

The building has been lit red white & blue a few times, including the 10th anniversary of 09/11. It was also lit up (all white I think) when bin Laden was whacked.
