One World Trade Center’s Exterior
Shimmers with New Podium Wall Glass Panels
... Starting this month, the walls of the 186-foot-tall 1 WTC podium are being clad in vertical glass panels to create a dynamic exterior that will animate the ground level experience of the building for pedestrians.
More than 4,000 frosted glass fins, each measuring 13 feet 4 inches by two feet, are being specially created by the contractor Permasteelisa. The glass fins will attach to the exterior of the podium wall at varying angles to create a series of v-shaped wing effects along the building surface. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the v-shaped glass cladding pattern will provide needed ventilation for the mechanical systems within the podium— including a 1.2-megawatt, next-generation fuel-cell plant housed above the lobby.
One WTC uses a new form of high- performance, low-emittance (low-E) glass coating technology on its glass panels to maximize sunlight and minimize heat gain within the building. This glass coating is also reflective, creating a shimmering effect on the building’s surface. In addition, the podium wall will use concealed energy-efficient LEDs to create a soft exterior glow.
The podium cladding installation is a critical element of 1 WTC’s aesthetic. The tower is scheduled to top off at 104 floors and 1,776 feet above street level (including its spire). Upon completion of its exterior structure this year, 1 WTC will be the tallest skyscraper in the United States ...
• The podium’s new glass panels reflect, refract, and transmit light much like the water cascading in the nearby memorial pools.
• The low-emittance (low-E) coatings on 1 WTC’s glass panels are microscopically thin layers of metal or metallic oxide that block the transfer of heat from sunlight through the window. Though made of metal, these layers are virtually invisible.

Flying into Newark airport last night, One World Trade Center really stands out in the night sky. Beautiful, just wish there was twin.

A battle is brewing for the airwaves over Manhattan.
The owners of One World Trade Center are planning to install a broadcast antenna in the 1776-foot building's spire in a bid to lure some of the more than two dozen television and radio stations currently broadcasting from the Empire State Building.
The move—reviving an earlier broadcast plan that was dropped out of financial concerns—would inject some competition into the skies for the Empire State Building, which since the collapse of the original World Trade Center towers in 2001 has been the go-to broadcast site in the city.
."Our expectations would be to become the premiere broadcast facility in New York City," said Thomas Bow, senior vice president at the Durst Organization, the development firm that controls One World Trade in a partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The building, currently under construction, is slated for completion at the end of 2013.
A spokesman for Malkin Holdings, an owner of the Empire State Building, declined to comment.
The Durst Organization expects to be able to take in about $10 million a year in rents and fees from television and radio stations drawn to the tower, the company said.
That is compared with the $16.1 million the Empire State Building generated from broadcasters in 2010, according to a securities filing. The only other main competitor is 4 Times Square, which is owned by the Durst Organization and primarily serves as a backup location for broadcasters, and would offer itself as a backup under the new broadcast plan.
The plan, which came after Durst Organization executives pitched the Port Authority on the idea, calls for other changes to the planned 408-foot spire on top of One Trade Center. Its architectural cone would be stripped away, putting in place a thinner, more functional spire that the Durst Organization said would save about $20 million.
The revision, however, drew criticism from the building's architect, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, people familiar with the matter said.
Under the agreement, Durst will put up the approximately $7 million of infrastructure and about $20 million of costs to build out the broadcast space for tenants, the company said. The proceeds would be split between the two owners, although Mr. Bow declined to give specifics.
The Port Authority pulled back from that route three years ago when it became concerned with putting in more money into the tower and the agency began worried that there wouldn't be enough interest from broadcasters.

Two giants fighting for air supremacy. But how is it that tv stations are still broadcasting with antenna? Thought that was settled last year.

We haven't gotten to that point in the future, yet.
Call the cops and file a noise complaint, eh? Would be interesting to see the ship intercepted by the NYPD for being an obnoxious neighbor.
If Disney's actions are somehow legal, then I'm buying a tugboat and blaring annoying advertisements across the city during all hours of the night
I hate to be such a Scrooge, but what I hate more is when anyone, for any reason, interrupts my sleep unnecessarily, and also when big corporations are allowed to pull off shenanigans that lesser citizens would obviously be punished for.

The steel up at the +90th floor is of a different color than the regular bare steel. Anyone know the reason to this?
Yes. The white cone encasing the antenna will be gone, the radome too. So the new spire will look similar to 4 TS - butt ugly. What a disgrace.

I'm not so upset, because I've always viewed that radome as a gimmick to compensate for chickening out on building higher floors. It was an antenna, is now an antenna, and will always be an antenna. The real disgrace was not rebuilding twins as tall or taller than the Sears tower. Just IMHO of courseYes. The white cone encasing the antenna will be gone, the radome too.
