As a practicing engineer all I can say is it was beautiful when it was installed and it's still beautiful. Hope they preserve a big chunk.

I knew an engineer that had the KISS idiom stenciled on his office wall. Which made sense to me.

Pictures from yesterday of the underpass and the granite wall. Looks like they're putting in rebar for the walls.

    Great shots 325ccr ! Digging Shist !

The big steel, in case anyone didn't click on the link in my last post.

Exploded view of a 24 foot section of "The East Box Girder" showing the five peices.

And another shot showing what one piece of one section would look like on a truck.

WOW that thing sure looks impressive!
What's going to be done to the inner side of it once it's put in place? Concrete, more steel, something else, or just gonna be left void? "Walls" of it look thinner than the plate girder just next to it.
I'm not an architect in any way, don't know what they look like in the end (from the inside, I mean).

    Thanks!

How much do the sections weigh?

I haven't added the diaphragms yet, and there are still some stiffeners to be added, that's why it looks a bit weak.

I haven't finished the calculation's yet, this is still very much a work in progress. (Hint, they have an 18000 with a Max-ER kit sitting there waiting for something to do)

PS: I guess a 2.5 inch thick plate does look thin when it makes up one wall of a 21 by 35 foot box beam.

From the 1st quarter report published June 4th:
"The East Box Girder is a primary support
member of the #1 Subway Line in the PATH Hall area. This 200-foot, 1,500-ton
    beam
will transfer the Hub Roof loads to the super columns. Moving forward, the
East Box Girder has been re-sequenced to allow for better coordination between
the temporary shoring and permanent PATH columns. It is expected to arrive on
site toward the end of 2010."

How and where do they get these into the city?

Can someone point out where the east box girder is in this diagram?

It doesn't show up there, but it sits just to the right of the No. 1 subway box, just beneath the surface.
