Does any one know what they are doing to the #1 box? Its really teared up

Yeah, are they just replacing the concrete, building a new superstructure or creating access to install things below it?

Part of the "top-down" method, it seems. The pathway on top of the box was temporary, used for staging and mobile cranes. Now it looks like they're either beginning the first phases of the new Greenwich Street, or tearing away that section to re-modify it for the box girder.

They are exposing the parts that will tie to the new steel members which will carry the load of the subway box.

They probably could have saved $100 million by closing the #1 line and tear it all down and build anew.

$100 million for world peace in Manhattan, cheap at twice the price.

I totally agree with that comment!

After all its only a short walk over to the 4/5 for a free transfer had they shut it down completely.

(I, myself, would have no problem walking from Chambers to the SI ferry if thats where I was going)

If it didn't run to the ferry, they probably would have, and used shuttle buses.

If they had kept the old SF terminal, they could have reopened the Bowling Green shuttle. What transit oriented excitement.

I find it simply stunning that they continue to dig after 9 years plus!

Digging to China is more tedious than I thought.

Anyone know if Tutor Perini's contract has ended? They have been lifting out machines yesterday and today. If anyone is in the area now they are lifting out a big excavator now
